Lovely! It will suck to leave it behind. Please share how the cabinet restraining goes! I am thinking of trying it as well.

Thanks. I will try to document the staining. I originally tried the gel stain that has been floating around Pinterest, but it was a total pain. It really just coats like a paint rather than absorbing and it was impossible to get it to coat evenly in the little nooks and crannies. So I stripped it down and we are starting again with liquid stain instead.

Well, already you've been helpful because that was what I was going to try. :)

Just FYI, I went ahead and tried the gel stain anyway. It worked great for me, but my cabinets were flat front and there weren't really any nooks and crannies. I agree that it was more like painting than staining, but since I didn't want to sand everything, it was a good option for my project. I'm not sure that it's any different than if I had painted my cabinets dark brown thought.

Glad it worked for you. It was a mess for me, and seemed like it would have been easier to get the same effect with brown paint. We ended up doing pretty much the same procedure but with liquid stain, sanding between coats and not wiping off the excess stain. It was easier to get into the crannies and corners of the detail trim.
