I'm a recently graduated law student who lives in Boston with her boyfriend and her pudgy cat. Our building, as best as I can date it, was built between 1890 and 1920, so it has a lot of character and some really charming details. After a little prodding from
silly_narziss today, I thought I'd share some of them with you all.
Here's the front door to our building. I fell in love with the building almost as soon as I saw it. The hallways have this incredible tin detailing all throughout, and it's painted a delightful, soft gray. I thought it might be painted-over textured wallpaper, until I started picking at a corner one day and realized it wasn't (needless to say, I was thrilled by this discovery).
This is my kitchen. I thought we could start here because it's one of the features that really sold me on the apartment. I love the glass-paned cabinet, the open shelving, and all the white everywhere. I have a collection of vintage citrus crate labels, one of which you can see here, because my hometown is a large citrus production area and I enjoy having little reminders of home.
One of the drawbacks of the kitchen is that, unfortunately, it had no real pantry. I like to cook a lot and tend to keep a well-stocked pantry, so I had to improvise. I bought a book case and two sets of tea towels, sewed over the ends of the towels, and hung them using tension rods. Voila! Instant pantry.
Our dining area is not particularly large, but it works for the two of us.
Next to the kitchen is the living room. I've cut out a large portion of it, because it's filled with a certain fella's collection of large and hideous electronic gadgets. The rest is moderately safe for consumption, though the perpetual lack of natural light in here means I had to turn on the overhead lighting.
Apologies for the large black blobs over the frame above the desk, but it's my diploma and I realized my full name was entirely visible. I'm all for sharing, but not that much. The larger photo is meant to give you some sort of feel for how the layout works, though it also exposes the extension cord running the entire length of the room (the lack of outlets is a truly charming element of living in an old building, I can assure you).
And finally, we come to the bedroom, down the hallway. This is the other part of the apartment that I really fell in love with, because it has fabulous windows that let in lots of natural light. I've worked hard to turn it into a quiet haven where I can wind down after a long day, and it really helps me feel peaceful and tranquil. It has the AC unit, my favorite books, my knitting corner, and my cat, and really, what more could a girl need?
Thanks for visiting! Hope you enjoyed yourself. Come back any time.
