spring renovations!

June 25th 2009 my partner and I wrote the biggest checks of our life and became owners of our own little piece of Brooklyn.  You can see pictures of our building (built in 1928 as a hotel to house the visiting teams playing the Brooklyn Dodgers) and of our empty apartment before we moved in.  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2025907&id=1117802738&l=d7e640f57d

Being firsttime homebuyers we didn't have a ton of money to spend on redoing things until our tax return came (thank you first time homebuyers credits) so needless to say the last month or so has been very very busy in the land of home renovation. Thus far we've done our living room, kitchen, and home office (we did our bathroom last summer) and in the next few weeks will be doing the foyer and bedroom.   below are some pics of how things have come together!

Livingroom:
painted the walls Benjamin Moore sterling

Home Office:
I"m an author and my partner is a performance aritst and academic so we both very much are in need of our own work space.  We devised a plan to split our office using a large bookcase (thank you ikea) and it worked really well to create seperate space---the apartmetn we rented before buying was about 1/2 the size in harlem and our office we shared was the side of each of our halves.

there is a roll of paper on my art desk that i can use for doodles and notes (notice the pens and pencils and crayons in the buckets on the walls)

the sewing table is an early 1900's school desk we scored at the brooklyn flea over the winter

the pipe shelves my partner built using pipes and boards from the home depot which we hauled in our granny cart on the subway fun times lol

kitchen
eventually we want to completely redo the kitchen but that's out of our budget for now.  we painted the walls, changed out all the hardware on the cabinets (made a huge difference) and replaced the light fixtures in the room, as well as installing some shelving etc.
