Show my your saucy fireplaces!

We are bidding on a house that has a truly fugly brick fireplace sticking out into the middle of a combination living room-dining room at a 45 degree angle :( We may just take it out and have no fireplace, but we're also thinking of spending the money to put in a really nice one.

Also, the house is on a busy corner. We're considering replacing the existing privacy fence with a better one, replacing windows, maybe getting a water feature to help block the sound of traffic in the corner bedroom. I'd love to see/hear your ideas and solutions!

I don't think it's the kind of fireplace you're looking for, but I can't resist showing off the best part of my studio apartment: the working fireplace with the gorgeous mantel.

Perhaps we could do this as an SUY subject.

I'm actually in the middle of a fireplace remodel and was going to post progress pictures today.

This is what the fireplace looked like before.

i just moved from a house on a busy corner. new windows were KEY. while my bedroom was in the back of the house (thank god), i still found that the best single thing i purchased was a LOUD humidifier. i ran that on high every night, it blocked everything. it was an old house without central a/c, so i bought a portable freestanding a/c unit to use in the livingroom, and while i rarely ran it (it was a cool house), i found it handy on occasions when i wanted to watch a movie, as it allowed me to close the windows up and block traffic noise so i could hear the movie without suffocating.
