Operation: Organize the Craft Crap

Jun 24, 2009 15:59

Well, it finally happened. After two years of opening random cabinets and having crafty crap fall on his head, hubby declared that all of the crafting stuff needed to be organized and in one place. He even was so kind as to give up a corner of his man-cave. This was the last of the rooms to sort of be merged together.

Office Before:

Being given the task of organizing my crafty stuff proved harder than originally thought. I found these great boxes at IKEA that I felt would prove ideal for my mission with the plan of painting them in the blue and black/brown color scheme that we already had going on in the office. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80073304 Wouldn't you know it? "Sea Glass" (blue) and "Oil Rubbed Bronze" (Black/brown) have both been discontinued by rustoleum. Fortunately, I was able to find what I needed via Amazon.

Overall view from the doorway:

Above his desk includes things like the puzzle we purchased at the Ghibli museum in Japan while on honeymoon and put together after our trip. Also vintage superman post cards which he collected, his old boyscout sash, and a giant card signed from the cast and crew of a show I worked on. Also not shown he has some sweet lights that are underneath the desk that change color which make the wall glow.

His desk is also attached to an Expedit book shelf. The white globes are lights. Also the blue boxes seen used to be green until we painted them blue. They're perfect for storing DVDs from various freelance clients or office supplies.

Also up above is a road sign that used to point the way to the Rolland Glass Company that belonged to his family before his grandfather sold it. The sign is a little momento that he acquired during a trip back east. And next to it of course is more Superman stuff.

His chair with a very special pillow. It used to be an old leather bomber jacket. This was one of his first purchases for himself when he got a paying job. Alas, the leather started to fall apart and was being held together via ducktape. When he finally threw it away one year, I secretly fished it out, and had the good pieces fashioned into a pillow for his office chair.

The filing cabinet used to be birch in color until we spray painted it to match the room. The poster up above is from a feature that the hubby co-exec-produced.

And now for my side! I needed a decent sized work space where I could have my craft stuff on hand, but still have room to work. The larger items like the sewing machine, paper cutter and cutting mat for quilting are easily stored below.

All the boxes painted and labeled. (I know two aren't labeled yet... I'm still deciding what to put in them.)

Up above are hats from various shows I've worked on, a collage of us with our friends, and some art work we picked up at comic con in San Diego. The artist is Tommy Castillo. I really like his dark take on the fairy tales.

Higher up are various autographed items and the surviving cans of film from hubby's first ever feature project along with a photo of him directing.

There are also other items up there like old lunch boxes that hubby was collecting for a bit.

Down next to my desk I also have a small Expedit book case that has boxes I painted the "sea glass" color containing larger items like stuffing, fabric, ribbon, paper.

Last of all behind the door contain a massive amount of hats that we have. The other half of the collection hangs on the back of our bedroom door. (I have no idea how we got so many freaking hats.)

Hope you enjoyed!
