It has been a long time since I have done any real cooking, other than the very, very rare dish here and there (and I mean rare). I used to cook a lot, until the car accident back in 2000, which involved me losing my sense of smell for a while. My attempts after that event were unsuccessful and unenjoyable (in both process and result), and I quickly lost the confidence and interest in cooking. I still make the odd meal / dish here and there, but generally, despite the considerable return of my sense of smell, I'm still not overwhelmingly confident.
Examination of my budget this week with the motorcycle goal in mind, has finally made me realize that I need to get back into cooking. My current food budget is high, and can be cut down with me cooking at home. So, the new regime starts today. And for my own sake, I will be trying to note down in brief posts what I'm doing here, if only for my own sake, so I can see that I'm succeeding.
I decided to make my variant of shepherd's pie today, and had the added bonus of an opportunity to invite a friend over to watch Firefly and Battlestar Galactica and have supper. Cooking is always better when there is someone else to cook for, and it was nice to have positive feedback from someone else (verbal and tangible - I figure you don't eat second helpings unless you really do like something! It turned out well, with considerable spice and flavour, and I have leftovers for at least 3 more meals. Hurrah! Sometime in the next day or two, my homemade tomato meat spaghetti sauce.
