Old clothes could work with sealing the windows where they leak. Same with old bed sheets are far as covering the window is concerned, but any sturdy flat surface should do, I think.

Some mud around the seals might help too. If I knew how to weave rugs, I'd make sure all the main rooms and buildings people frequent had one.

That'd take a bit of fire to melt, otherwise you're just stuck with cold, wet mud.

That would a lot of all nighters, too.
