I say bull that evil is always selfish. What about neutrals? They are sometimes selfish. That doesn't make them evil. I see evil as more willing to hurt others to get what you want. Just about everyone, to some degree is selfish in one way or another. Does that make them evil? No. Even good people can be selfish. In a good gooders zeal to do good, isn't it somewhat selfish to force his belief on others? You can make others pay for their crimes but you can't force them to be good.
Following laws has nothing to do whatsoever with goodness. Nazi Germany was very lawful but they were evil as hell. Robin Hood was Chaotic and broke the laws but did it for good reasons. I also wouldn't say thinking inside the box is sane. It could also actually be insane. A person with no creativity at all or ability to imagine at all could technically be insane. What if this person wanted everyone else to think "within the box" and tried to force them too? Sounds pretty looney to me. I've seen the whole "abide by lawful thinking/conform or else!" concept a few times in Sci-Fi and Fantasy and the person who tried that was evil.
