So this weekend was much more eventful than I had planned! Everything from a bad job interview to sitting in the back seat of a cop car to a visit from my father. Here's a rundown of this weekend's events:
Friday
I went to the park library to see the peace panel display entitled "The A-Bomb and Humanity" . . . it was pretty moving. There was one illustration of a mother trapped under a fallen wall and her child there not being able to help her. And there was a poem written underneath about knowing she can't do anything for her mother and walking away hearing her mother screaming in the background, and saying goodbye forever . . . yeah, so I was pretty much in tears. Any of my CMU peeps who haven't seen it yet should definitely go check it out!
Then I went over to the Student Success Center in the towers for my summer hall director interview. WORST INTERVIEW EVER! I did such a bad job. First of all, I knew my two interviewers pretty well, one of them (Bill O'Dell) offered me a job as an MA and the other one (Nathan Thompson) was actually one of my references for the position. So that was both good and bad. For a few of the questions I think I was like "You guys know me" as if I were saying "c'mon . . . it's Derek . . . give me a job!" Oh, and the last question they asked was "what sets you apart from all of the other candidates?" And my answer was quite possibly the worst thing I could have said. I said "Well . . . I've been an RA . . . but I'm sure most of the other applicants were RAs . . . I was a camp counselor . . . but again, most of the applicants probably were . . . Pretty much anything I could possibly say right now will be the same as what all the other applicants would say. I mean you know me, you talk with Andrea who probably knows me best, basically nothing I can say right now is going to make you feel like I can do the job if you didn't already." And the whole time I'm saying this, I'm like "really, derek? Is this really what you should be saying right now?" But I can't help it . . . I'm brutally honest even when it's not in my best interest. Oh well . . . it's over now. I called my mom right away afterward and had a little bit of a break down about the whole thing. I'm better now. But I'd be very surprised if I actually got the job.
After the worst interview of all time I headed on over to Wightman for one of the most awkward things I've ever done: a photo shoot. I had to get my picture taken for the fashion show . . . all the designers have a picture and bio in the booklet/program thingy. Well, the photographer wanted everything to look very natural. She made me take off my tie (I only had it on because of the interview) and unbutton it . . . then she made me unbutton it more, and I was like "Ooh, it's a sexy shoot" and then laughed nervously cause I HATE getting my picture taken. So then She made me angle in a certain way and was trying to force laughter so it looked more natural . . . only problem with that is that when I laugh, my eyes get all squinty and my face turns all purple. . . not very good for photos. Oh yeah . . . and laughing usually results in my infamous "no chin" look . . . most people worry about a double chin . . . I would like at least one to show up in a picture! So the photographer allowed me to take a little break and watch the other designers have their pictures taken, cause she saw that I was freaking out! So I did . . . then I had to be photographed again . . . no less awkward than the first time . . . but got through it . . . hopefully out of the 15 million pictures she took of me there will be at least one good one!
Then I answered a few questions about my internship for Bis so she can write her paper . . . after that it was daiquiri night at Karime's apartment :-D The daiquiris were really good . . . and I got a little tipsy . . . and it was GREAT avoiding the children that had invaded my apartment! I've already described that whole situation, so I won't delve into that any more. Oh wait . . . yes I will! One of the little brats clogged our effin' toilet! And of course we don't have a plunger, so it sat there, clogged, until . . .
Saturday
I woke up to the lovely sound of screaming children running up and down the stairs . . . what a joyous sound! I try to sleep even though I can't . . . finally wake up . . . Melissa bought a plunger, but doesn't know how to use it. So who plunges the stale shit that's clogging the pipes? That's right, your dear old friend Derek! I thought I was going to throw up, it smelled so bad! Then I worked on my part of a group project and e-mailed it to everyone.
Then I visited Angela for a little while and watched the end of the Wedding Singer . . . kinda started crying when he was singing on the plane, haha. Then I went to see Katy and Jimbo and Katy's friend Andrea (?) . . . fun times were had except that Katy and Jimbo have a ferret and we all know how I feel about small animals! Needless to say, when the ferret started to jump toward me I jumped onto the futon and probably screamed like the little girls in my apartment! They were gonna watch RENT which I just watched on Thursday so I decided to head on out . . . that way they could keep the ferret out of the cage running free and creepy-like.
After that I made my way over to Larzy where Megan was working at the desk. Told her all my horrible interview stories, had a few laughs, then she bought me dinner at Taco Bell . . . yummmmmmm . . . the crunch-wrap supreme is sooooo good! After dinner I was on my back to my place . . .
. . . when my car decided to quit on me! Lost all power to my car and I drifted it over to the shoulder as far as I could get it off the road before I lost momentum. Luckily I was only about 75 yards or so from my apartment, so I walked home. Lisa was downstairs with her friend Matt doing some homework . . . I asked them for some help. Matt said he'd give me a jump, so we got in his van and drove over to my car. Well . . . the shoulder isn't too spacious where Phoebe died, and there's a steep ditch on the side of the road . . . Matt's van got stuck in that ditch. Some creepy townie came by and offered to help us pull it out . . . I got the tow rope out of my trunk and we hooked it up and he tried to pull the van out of the ditch. Got it a little ways out, but couldn't quite get it the rest of the way. Then the fuzz shows up. The cop car pulls up and the creepy townie was like "I've gotta go get something from home, I'll be back" and then he speeds off to get away from the cop, LOL! The cop was like, "that guy was really smart getting away from here" . . . well apparently it's illegal to try and tow a car out of a ditch. You can tow a car if dies on the side of the road, like in my case . . . but not from a ditch cause that's technically an accident. So he was like "we have 2 cars here on the shoulder that we need to move . . . let's start with this one ::points at my car::" So we push my car into the nearest parking lot, which luckily is a Deerfield parking lot :-) So that's taken care of . . . now we have to call a tow truck for Matt's van . . . cause he can't drive it forward down in the ditch to where it's not as steep cause it's private property, and thus illegal. So the cop lets us wait in the back of his car until the tow truck gets there. About an hour and $75 later, Matt's van is back on the road. We go back to the apartment and call it a night! Haha, I know I made the cop car thing sound more exciting in the beginning than it actually was, lol, deal with it! Oh yeah . . . Matt had weed in his pocket the whole time we were talking with the cop!
Later in the night I was upstairs working on some silk roses (my silk got here!!!) and Artisha had some friends over to drink . . . they were WAY loud! Oh yeah . . . I should probably mention that the kids were sleeping over at Heather's apartment saturday night. One of them was talking really loudly saying something about gay people, when Artisha was like "Ssshhhhhh! My roommate is gay!!" Trying to be quiet about it, but it was drunk-quiet, which means loud. That was amusing, haha. I tried to sleep, but couldn't really get to sleep until everyone left.
Sunday
Woke up today and walked to campus . . . only took about a half an hour . . . not too bad . . . it wasn't too cold out, but it was windy which stung a little. I had my MA new staff orientation, which went pretty well. I'm really excited about working next year . . . it's gonna be a good one! After the meeting, Janelle was nice enough to give me a ride home so I didn't have to walk. About an hour later (we got out of the MA meeting early) my dad got here and we started working on the car. We cleaned off the battery terminals and then jumped it . . . it started, so my dad was like, OK, let's drive it to Wal-Mart. I went to close the hood and noticed something wasn't quite right . . . the alternator wasn't turning! There was no belt between the alternator and the power steering control. So we drive up to AutoZone in my dad's van and buy a new belt . . . put it on . . . jump Phoebe again . . . and drive her to the gas station where my dad got me some gas :) Then we went to Kroger and bought a lot of good stuff! Yay for having food :-D
And that's pretty much where I am right now . . . gotta do some studying tonight cause I know I'm not gonna want to do it tomorrow night knowing I have to wake up at 6AM on Tuesday to sell my life essence! I'd better egt to work!
Hope you all enjoyed this GI-NORMOUS post!
