Where The Heart Lies

Summary: Edward and Al return from Germany after frightful events that make them realise it really isn't where they are meant to be after all. But when Edward finds out his heart still lies with a certain childhood friend even after four years, he will do anything to break her free from the prison she has created for herself.

Pairing: EdxWin

Genre: Competition, Romance, Smut (Yes smut! So don't read if you can't take it!)

Warning: There may also be scenes which you find offensive in the exposure of Winry and how she is being treated by certain people. But let me tell you she isn't the suicidal lost all hope type it seems she is at the start.

Where the Heart Lies

This story is a pointless smut, meant to delight the readers who like this particular couple. So just enjoy the pointlessness for once and let yourself indulge :P. EdxWin

Chapter One: Denial

“Shiiiiit that hurt, couldn’t you find a more efficient way to do it Al?” Edward cried with pain as he rubbed the dust from his coat.

“No brother! We weren’t using one of those planes because if we crashed to the ground it could have exploded.” Al stood from the ground and glanced up at the sky to see the yellow hole still intact. Edward was quick to follow his example, furrowing his eyebrows as the hole continued to smile or frown down upon them, Edward wasn’t sure which one it was.

“Isn’t it supposed to be closing? This is the whole point we came back Al!” Edward glanced down at his slightly burnt hand and howled with pain as he tried to move his ankle, only to discover it wasn’t such a good idea.

“I realise that brother just give it a minute!” Al replied impatiently, flicking his hand at his brother’s constant worries.

“If shit starts coming through then we are doomed Al. We don’t want a repeat of four years go!” Edward came to the conclusion that his ankle was definitely sprained… not broken or anything of the such, but certainly lying in a funny position that caused him pain if he even thought about placing weight on it. While Edward was busy trying to find a way to get around this little mess he and his brother had gotten themselves into, he hadn’t heard Al sigh in relief.

“See brother!” Edward followed Al’s fingers with his eyes to notice a completely normal blue sky above them, no birds, no clouds, and certainly no big yellow portals leading to another world. “The plan all worked! We even arrived at the right destination.” Al dug his hands into his pockets with a smile as he glanced out at the yellow home in front of them.

“I dunno Al… Winry might not even live here anymore… she probably doesn’t even wanna see us… and hey!” Edward pointed down to his ankle. “I’m sure snapping your older brother’s bone in half wasn’t in the plan… or wait a minute… was it?!” Edward’s eyes became slits as they eyed his brother’s innocent façade. No matter how clear Al’s expression was, Edward knew not to fall for the ‘innocent younger brother’ anymore. Al was twenty-one now, and more devilish than Edward had ever known him in his time. “I CAN’T MOVE AL!” Edward’s shout of protest instantly snapped the younger brother back into reality; he shifted weight on his feet slightly and snapped his fingers.

“I know! I’ll go get Winry to help!” Al grinned to himself as he ran no more than a few steps before Edward’s hand reached out to grab his ankle. Al tripped, inevitably, and landed flat on his stomach with a moan of pain.

“Leave Winry alone! She has probably gotten on with her life she doesn’t need us hopeless brother’s disturbing her again! Do you understand Al? We are not sleeping at her house tonight! We are not having a happy reunion with her, do you understand! What we did to her can’t be forgiven just let the woman alone!” Edward folded his arms over his chest with a sigh as he watched his younger brother sit up and scratch his head. “Besides… there is no way she will be able to help moving me, my limbs weigh a tone have you forgotten?”

“What do you have against seeing her brother?”

“Nothing! If I see her, I see her!”

“Let me rephrase that, what do you have against just apologising to her about it?” Al leant back on his arms as he watched his brother fight with himself. “I have no problem doing it. I’m not going to not see her just because you have issues when it comes to ‘Winry stuff’ no wonder she thought you hated her, you avoid her like she was the next virus that’s going to send the world into total ruin. All she did was help you!”

“DROP WINRY! And go and find me help! I’m not sitting out front of someone’s house all day. its called trespassing you know?” Edward gave his brother a serious look before Al sighed and decided to comply.

“Honestly brother.” Al wiped the loose dust and grass off his pants as he stood and began walking forward. “As if Winry would think of you as a trespasser… I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

Edward sighed as he turned to look at the yellow house before him. “Who knows what you think of me, right Winry?” It was in that one second he wished he hadn’t whispered her name to himself. Not only did the feeling of being alone with her return… that tingly feeling he got whenever he thought about her. But it might have been the reason why she had decided to look out the window and see him sitting there like a complete idiot. He froze as she pulled the curtain back and flinched when he saw her freeze, they exchanged completely incomprehensible looks before Winry turned her attention towards something in the house, it was as if she was checking if it was safe to look again.

Before long she was glancing back at him again, rubbing her eyes as if she had seen a ghost. He decided it would be less strange if he just looked at the grass in front of him and the last thing he saw was her shaking her head with disbelief before he retreated to the grass. It wasn’t another second before he heard the front door open hastily, and it wasn’t another quick second before he heard her desperate steps towards him… she was by his side quicker than he could say her name again. He had no idea what her expression was due to his lack of eye contact with her, and he was going to keep it that way.

“There’s no way…”

Oh there is a way…

“You can’t just come back!”

I realise that…

“I have stopped waiting already! I stopped long ago!”

I never expected you to wait…

“Why! No why are you back! Why now? Why didn’t you come back three years ago when I needed you most? Why!?” Her voice had become desperate, and his fists were steadily becoming tighter clenched at his side.

I had no choice!

“What am I supposed to do now your back?”

Just go away… please just don’t cry

“Answer me dammit!” It was then he heard her drop to her knees by his side. Her hand was placed on his chin and she forcefully turned his head towards her, and willed his eyes to look into hers. He hoped to god the tears he wanted to cry weren’t being reflected in his eyes and looked away from her beautiful blue eyes with a blush.

“Ahahaha… So… do I get a welcome back kiss after all these years?” Why not joke about it… they were close enough… he sure was ready enough to let her know… why not… why the hell had he just said it?

“Edward…” The funny thing was she wasn’t angry, and she wasn’t bashing him over the head like he thought she would have, she sounded more deprived, hurt, and completely without hope.

“Hey… I didn’t mean it like that… I mean it like this.” He raised his hand to her cheek and gently kissed the other. He felt her freeze, he felt her breath hitch, and he was glad because he was probably feeling the same way right about now. “Just a friendly kiss that’s all…” Yeah sure… what’s a friendly kiss if all you think about is the other kiss… He kissed her cheek gently again then wrapped his arms around her. “I’m back Winry. I’m really back this time. Really.”

“Edward…” Her hands grabbed fistfuls of his shirt as she tried to push herself away from him. “Now you say your back… I can’t believe it… right after.”

“Hey… Winry are you crying?” Edward bent down a little to get a closer look at her eyes as he held her at arms length.

“You’re such a jerk! You can’t come back, don’t just think I’m going to accept you, because I’m not! You can’t live with me Edward! You can’t be near me at all, do you understand?”

Edward’s eyes remained passive, because he knew this was what was going to happen anyway. He wasn’t expecting to be reunited with his childhood crush, or best friend, he had lost her the very minute he left her for the last time she would let him. This time he had done enough damage to last an eternity, and he wasn’t going to push anything.

“I know Winry… I realise what Al and I did… I don’t expect to be with you anymore.” He looked away and let his hands fall to his sides.

“No Edward don’t you see… you’re already too late…”

“Huh…?”

“Winry Travis! Just what in the world are you doing with that man!”

Edward watched Winry look towards the man on her front porch with terror; she instantly backed a little closer into Edward before flinching away from him, realising that just provoked greater anger in the man walking towards them with fury.

“N-nothing! I swear!”

Edward felt his heart sink as the worst feeling he could have possibly imagined sunk into him. He hadn’t even thought of this possibility… he hadn’t even… thought about how much it could… hurt… he felt his heart clench up as he looked down at the woman practically in his arms… she wasn’t his anymore.

“If you so much as laid a hand on my Wife you bastard!” The man moved closer, even Edward was beginning to become frightened… with the position of his foot and all.

“It’s Edward, Mark. It’s Edward Elric! Please! You know how much this man means to me.” The man seemed to stop in his tracks as Winry said his name, his face arrogantly became even angrier especially directed at Winry. Edward felt his grip tighten around Winry’s waist as the man eyed the two of them with suspicion. “He needs a place to stay!” Winry was being so polite it wasn’t funny, Edward almost shivered at how scared she was, it wasn’t natural for Winry to be scared, and since when did she bow down to a man? It was usually him bowing down to her if he knew what was best for him.

Edward instantly remember what she said before ‘You can’t live with me’ He couldn’t help but feel she was feeling sorry for him and attempted to stop her from proposing the situation to her husband. He didn’t want the two to have any problems, especially the type he could cause if he was ever alone with Winry...

“W-wait! I thought you said that I couldn’t-" her hand squeezed Edward’s inner thigh in a deathly tight grip and Edward instantly shut his mouth. Honestly, if this was the way her husband looked at her… Edward wasn’t quite sure he wanted to leave Winry alone with him at all.

“Whatever, fucking hell Winry! When are you just going to throw the trash out! That man left you; I don’t want him in my house! But I’m doing it for you because I know he was your friend. But God Winry! If I so much as have a problem with this bastard then you know what’s going to happen.”

“Don’t talk to her like that!” Edward clenched his fists tighter and felt his face grow hot with sudden surging anger. No-one talked to Winry like that.

“It’s alright Ed…” Winry looked away from her husband and Edward. She was already used to this, and she didn’t need Edward disturbing the peace she had managed to achieve with her husband lately.

“No it’s not fucking alright, listen to me now. This isn’t your house, its Winry’s! I don’t care if I left her or not. She is still one of the most precious people to me and if you even think about hurting her-" Edward was cut off as the man raised a knife, and it’d better just be a knife for cutting the meat if this man knew what was best for him, was what Edward was thinking.

“Like I said Winry. I don’t want any problems.” With that, he walked away back into his house, glancing over his shoulder at the two before entering.

“Ed…”

“What the hell Winry? What the hell was that?”

“I’m marri-"

“Yeah married… I can see.” Winry looked away at the anger in his voice. “But married to that? Winry why did you do it?”

“You wouldn’t understand! You would never… no-one knew what it was like to be left alone… without anyone you love and trust. So don’t fucking lecture me Edward, you lost your right along time ago.”

He knew when to shut up… so did she. And silence was all that could be heard from the two of them as they sat together. Silence until the faint outline of Al’s figure could be seen on the horizon.

Notes on Edward and Winry:

Yes they have both changed dramatically, it’s been four years. Edward has been with women and is no longer as timid, but still holds a shy spot when it comes to Winry of course. And Winry… who knows about her, she is not the type to get depressed and give up I know… don’t think that is what I have made her like in this story because it isn’t. You find out more about the reason Edward and Al are back later on. I hope you enjoy and realise they may be OC due to the four year difference.
