Okay, so way, way back in the mystical year of 1998, Disney released Mulan. On (I believe) the same weekend, Warner Brothers released another animated children's movie called Quest For Camelot. Of course it bombed, because hey, it was Mulan. I remember seeing this movie in theatres with my sister, and I also had the Gameboy game, but I had never watched it again. UNTIL YESTERDAY.
This movie is SOOOOOO GOOD.
See, the themes of this movie are teamwork and equality and that is basically hammered into you every couple seconds, and I find it delightful. Actually it would be interesting to do a feminist compare and contrast of the two films, because they share some similar themes, and each movie does some things really well and some things not so well (in terms of entertainment as well as feminism; the music in Mulan is better, and the dragons just cannot be compared, but on the other hand, see following paragraph). But overall QfC is the more feminist of the two (as well as the one I like more), mainly because nobody ever even *tells* the female main character that she can't be a knight. Not only that, but instead of going home at the end, she does gets knighted! And rides off into the sunset w/ love interest!
Said love interest being (aside from above-mentioned protagonist) the major reason I like QfC better. He's blind! And a hermit! With a seeing-eye falcon! And, well, see the following Actual Commentary by Rachel:
Rachel: *love interest walks sadly away from protagonist* Oh, he's crying. He's so totally crying. *shot of love interest's face* Holy shit, he really *is* crying!
In summary, good movie. Now to read the book it was apparently based on.
...Did I mention that this movie has Gary Oldman? And that he has his very own musical number?
