I'll post some music or something later to make people interested in this lj again. Sorry.
IN GOLD
The only time she ever really feels at home anymore is when she teleports.
It gives her peace. Light pulls her under into a space that is neither here nor there- for a blessed moment, all weight is lifted from her shoulders. Her troubles, her memories, her fears and dreams, everything is swept away in gold. She is the magic and the magic is pure.
She's dying. She can't keep going at this rate. Even the great ones, those who have studied for ages, cannot work illusions and summons for so long without needing to rest. Sheer force of will keeps her going now, and her will cannot last forever.
Every moment is another silent tick of the clock in her mind. How long will it be before that fated hour? asks the clock. Does she have enough time that Master Luc can accomplish his goals? Will it be her weakness that dooms the world to slavery?
Of course she would never think to tell him. It's difficult for him, too. When she sees him she almost overflows with compassion. If she only had the means to comfort him, as he had her years ago... but that time is past now, and all comfort with it. The one she loves is carrying his burden alone.
Memories bring her comfort when his mask hides his eyes. Does he still remember warm nights when he taught her the names of the stars? Does he still remember wrapping her in blankets and feeding her stolen chocolate when nightmares plagued her sleep? Does he still remember laughing with a sort of annoyed good grace when she realized she was taller than him?
She runs over their first meeting over and over in her mind, even as she casts her spells. She was ten, her feet dangling over a staircase as she watched impassively the people going about their business below. She wanted for nothing she could put a name to. She had long ago come to the assumption that her heart, like the Circle Palace, was white and transparent crystal. He sat beside her and started talking.
All at once her heart started beating again. Since that moment she has followed him without question.
Love is not blind. But love is foolish, and love can overlook little things. Love does not wonder if he knows how hard he's pushing her. Love does not wonder if this is the right thing. Love knows only itself, a feeling that almost breaks her heart at times.
She is... fond of them, in a way, these people who oppose him. She feels an odd sort of kinship with them. Maybe under different circumstances they too would have done what she does now.
The end draws nigh. Whether it is simply her end or the end of the world, she cannot say. But until that moment, she will hold out. She will fight in her own way, and she will wait for the time when the light caresses her for the last time and she is swept away in gold.
END
(Oh, melodrama, you're my only friend. I barely remember thinking anything about Sarah except that she was pretty. But I guess at some point I thought about her enough to write this fic.)
