Shadow Hearts thoughts
Finally! I keep meaning to write these things up. Character thoughts, spoilers for Post-Asmodeus-Rasputin.
Karin: First of all, *how* did someone this dumb become a higher-up in the German army? Since I highly doubt a woman could advance in 1915 GERMANY by skill alone. In an attempt to avoid disliking Karin, I've decided that she is merely an absolute spacecase and never pays attention to what's going on. She's not stupid, just Stuck in a Groove. And in that light, I like Karin, and find her extrodinarily funny. I also like how her totally ambiguous feelings for Yuri create a totally funny situation considering the extreme spoiler I have been informed of.
Yuri: I loved Yuri in Shadow Hearts, and I love him now. He's just such a loveable hero. Basically as dumb as everyone else, but he has street smarts, and zero tolerance for bullshit, which is awesome. His harassing the Judgement Ring is hilarious. His dancing with Blanka during Anastasia's exposition was funny as hell. Also, the fact that he now has a ten year old girl living in his head... and every time the game makes inderect reference to Alice, I laugh and sing the dead girlfriend song. So.
Geppetto: Why is he so overlooked? He's brilliant! Everything from his character design to his costumes for Cornelia to his voice acting is a work of pure genius on the part of the creators! Every time he says something, I cheer. I want to slash him with Yuri no I take that back I'm sorry don't hurt me! Actually, I want fic about Geppetto as a famous puppeteer, living in Paris in his nifty flat with the Magimel Brothers and several French hookers, and drinking absinthe while playing with Cornelia. That would be wicked cool.
Blanka: I think it says something about this game that one of the most intellegent characters is a freakin' *wolf* who can't even talk. If Blanka was human, he'd be some sort of young Clint Eastwood type street fighter with a dead girlfriend. As is, he's... a wolf. I mean, he's cool, and Wolf Bouts are fun, but there's not much to say about him otherwise.
Joachim: JOACHIM. I mean, how could I possibly not love him? His character traits read like a list of my favourite things. Pro wrestler, vampire (which isn't one of my favourite things, but the way Joachim does it...), homosexual, superhero... just... JOACHIM. Every little thing he does is magic. Especially when he finds his weapons. And Grand Papillion... okay, suffice it to say that Joachim may be one of my favourite characters in anything ever. And his relationship with the Great Gama is history's most touching love story.
Lucia: She doesn't do much except be dumb and make me laugh, but I love her all the same. Probably because of her hotness and her giant pussy. She and Joachim are utterly best friends forever and bond over Stud Cards. Tarot Cards make me very angry because they always come up reversed. Okay, I don't have much to say about Lucia.
Anastasia: Revising my earlier opinion, the most intelligent characters in this game are a freakin' wolf and a ten year old girl. I like Anastasia. Her voice acting was a little irritating at first, but she's just cute and bratty and adventurous enough to make me like her. And her tricky plans endear me to her. One question I have, though: does the Tsar actually get assasinated? And if not, doesn't that completely change the course of history? I mean, I know this series is an alternate universe, but that's a little extreme.
Nicolai: ...Okay, so his father was the Tsar, he became a Cardinal through careful manipulation of the church, he plans on ruling Mother Russia, and he made a Soul Pact with Astaroth. Plus he's in dorky love with Karin. Nicolai is obviously a very special individual. His conversation with Karin had me in stitches, because it was kind of hot, but also... he says he loves her like ten times, and I'm thinking "Say it again! A little louder! She can't heaaaar yoooou..." Anyway, he makes me laugh very loud. So he's cool.
Veronica: SHE IS SO NOT DEAD YET. She can't be. Lenny survived, as evidenced by Shadow Hearts III! Ronny must be alive! I don't care! She's so cute! I liked her so much! This blows.
In summary, this game has the best characters ever. And I love it very much. Onward, to the magical fortress of Rasputin the dumb!
