swimming and snow

My spring break trip was over all amazing.  I went to Selma, Alabama with a group of people I didn't know and we helped repair people's homes.  I helped build a handicap accessible ramp and added a railing to a man's porch.  Another project that the group did was re floor a lady's kitchen due to a huge hole in the middle of the floor, but I didn't get to help with that project.

When our work was done we had a free day and got to explore the city of Selma which was very active in the civil rights movement in the 60's, famous for the bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus bridge.  The city also has a street intersection I found humorous Martin Luther King Jr and Jeff  Davis (as in the President of the Confederate States of America).  I thought this odd.  On a whim we also decided to drive to the Ocean...we ended up in Pensacola, Florida.  And I got to swim in the Gulf of Mexico for the first time! :)

The next morning was one of our travel days.  A couple of the girls wanted to go to Memphis to see Graceland and what not.  So, the group was split in half in either wanting to go out of the way to Memphis or to just go home.  Being the group that we were we flipped a coin and went to Memphis... that was the plan.  We got pulled over for speeding in a construction zone in Alabama, both van drivers got tickets (their first tickets).  We hit a snow storm and had to stay the night in Mississippi (that national guard started to close roads and what not).  We ended up not going to Memphis, and taking a very long way home.

Over all the trip was fun, and it was really good for me to get away from things.
