USA Today: The best reporting ever!

Let's set some things straight:

1. The idea of Christ's divinity was changed. According to Bart Ehrmann in Misquoting Jesus, and supported by other authorities such as Karen Armstrong, scenes such as the descent of the dove to Christ as he was baptised were altered to refute the beliefs of fringe groups who did ( Read more... )

Regardless if the DaVinci Code has in basis in fact, there are things mentioned in the book that have certain truths attached to them. The Catholic Church is responsible for MANY atrocities throughout history, including destroying ancient old world pagan religions and forcing those involved to submit to the church's ways or be destroyed. Another is reducing women to little more than property (not to mention making them the bad guy, or the ENTIRE reason for MAN's downfall). Destroying any other ways of thinking that contradict their teachings (can you say inquisition or the crusades?) Yes, these are old arguments, but they DID happen and it seems that ANY attack on the church today meets with a venomous backlash from their leaders. They do not take kindly to critism whatsoever (but they are free to critisise anyone else). Let's face it, many of the rules of the Catholic Church are extremly outdated, yet they persist in enforcing them in their teachings. For instance, birth control. Keep having children no matter if you can afford them or take care of them (and they teach this in countries where poverty and hunger are rampant). This leads to the abortion issue which is really just another way to control women in general. Why can't priest's or nun's marry? It's not so much about chastity (although thats what the church would lead us to believe) it's really that if a priest or nun were to marry, they would have rights to church property and that is a big no no. This started in the middle ages, to prevent such a thing from happening. I could go on, but I am sure you are already aware of these ideas. I wonder, if the church considers Dan Brown's novel complete rubish, why do they put SO much time and effort in debunking it? What are they afraid of? Don't they realise they are just making more and more people interested in seeing the film? People LOVE controversy. I mean really, what is more believable; Jesus was JUST A MAN, married like normal men, had children etc... or he was the son of god? I for one believe the former. I am not saying he married Mary Magdeline, but the idea is possible that he did marry someone. However, history was written by the winners, and you and I both know who the winner really was.
