Sherlock 2x01 Response + Being a Detective

So, after much searching and questing, and a rather nasty fight with a bumbling but strong ogre of a download site, I finally have access to the second season of Sherlock. And, as of today, I have watched the first episode: A Scandal in Belgravia.

The episode was amazing! They played pranks and had jokes! They laughed! They are so in love! Even the girlfriends know it! (And, good, they've moved on from Sarah: the woman who didn't exist before this show) There were amazing time skips in this episode. I mean, SIX MONTHS? Then TWO MONTHS? It's like 'Holy cow!' So much for 'they've only just met.' They've known each other for awhile.

Oh, I loved the 'solving crime and blogging' montage at the beginning. :D It was awesome.

Not to mention the interactions between Irene and Sherlock and Irene and John. John was jealous the whole time and it was so funny. XD For a moment, when John was talking to Irene, it was almost like he broke the fourth wall and spoke to the fans: "In case anyone still cares, I'm not gay."

I loved how they showed you Sherlock thinking. It lets you know a bit more about how fast his mind works and how. In my own humble opinion, I'm not sure Sherlock was 'in love' with Irene so much as he was baffled and intrigued by her, since it took him so long and so much effort to find out even the slightest thing about her.

"Look at them. Caring so much. Do you ever think there's something wrong with us?"

And I loved Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson. "I think you know what I'm after." "Yes. I think I do." Yes, you bastard, you're after a sound thrashing and a quick death. How dare you lay a finger on Mrs. Hudson?!

Also "Oh shut up, Mrs. Hudson!" and both Sherlock and John are like "Whoa! Whoa! You did not just go there! You're about a heartbeat from losing your tongue, I don't care who you are."

I'm serious when I say that I expected Mycroft to be naked at the palace, because he was naked in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I was pleasantly surprised when it was Sherlock instead (who was naked).

Oh, another great part. "You've got clients, don't you?" "So?" "How do you think they know about you?" "I've got a website." "Yes, but they find you through my blog. No one reads your website or about the twenty-five different kinds of tobacco ash." (I know I screwed up that quoting, but whatever. If you saw the ep, you know the convo I'm talking about.) My thought here was "Apparently you do, John. ;D" though Sherlock was less than impressed.

But really, this wasn't meant to be a response to the show as it was me realizing that I think sort of like Sherlock does. Granted, I don't notice the dog fur on my fellow commuters' pants, but it's the same basic principle.

You see, when I see a guy, I tend to think of how good looking he is. This can be anywhere from 'no way in hell' to 'holy crap, he's gorgeous.' I then look more closely at them and deduce what I can about them. Usually I can tell by the type of clothes they're wearing whether or not they spend an abhorrent amount of time at the gym or playing sports. I look at these guys and judge by their appearance what they do in their spare time and what their personality is like. Sometimes I even decide whether they're hetero-, homo-, bi-, or simply metro- sexual. This one can be a bit tricky at times.

(A prime example of 'tricky' is my sister's boyfriend, because if I didn't actually know the boy, I would totally think he was gay, but he's head over heels for my sister so....Yea. Really very not gay.)

I do the same for girls, but to be honest, I find them rather boring in comparison.  Another reason is probably because I'm a girl with rather low self-confidence and examining other women makes me feel a bit turbed, in more than one way. (kudos if anyone caught that reference, btw. It's my newest fandom.) Part of it is likely that I'm judging myself based on them, so I try not to do it too often because it's counterproductive.

ANYWAYS.

It's not just their clothes I look at. I take into account their type of shoes, pants, shirt, the style of clothing their wearing, but I also notice whether they're listening to music and what kind of headphones they use, if they're reading and what it is, if they have their phone out, who they're talking to and the language they use, their body language, how they're sitting and where they're staring, what they're carrying with them, the tone of their voice, and more. In fact, in the half an hour bus ride round trip between my apartment and my university, I feel rather like an actual detective. (I mean, I do this in my classes too, but more so on the bus than in the classroom)

It's a great hobby. Not only do you realize things about other people and learn how they are different or similar, you also learn a bit about yourself. You're own biases and stereotypes become apparent when you try to observe another human being in an unbiased way. So I learn a bit about myself whenever I learn about someone else.

It's all rather fascinating, if I'm being completely open about it.
