Loss and Gain

Is it strange that I’ve lost faith in a fictional character?

In Merlin, Gaius has always been Merlin’s moral guide, his excuse maker and secret keeper, his teacher. He was never a genius by any standard, but he was intelligent and knew when to speak and keep his mouth shut. He’s made mistakes before, but I’ve always been able to see his point for what led to it. Two instances don’t give me that advantage:

Morgana. She came to him for help with her magic and he turned her away, saying it was better if she didn’t know the full extent of her powers. The problem is that she already knew about them, she was asking for reassurance that she wasn’t evil and/or going crazy. I feel that if Gaius had helped her the way he helps Merlin, Morgana never would have turned to Morgause for answers and would have been a good guy.

And now this. This past week’s episode of Merlin has lost my trust in Gaius. I may never forgive him.

SPOILERS!

Merlin tries to save Uther using magic to make Arthur trust magic and Morgana foils him with a spell reversing pendent. Arthur now thinks magic is all evil. Merlin blames himself for killing the king. Gaius finds the pendent, knows what it does and what it did, but doesn’t tell Arthur. I mean, really? Arthur has shown he trusts Gaius in magical affairs, asking his advice on such things with no doubt at all. If Gaius said the pendent reversed the magic and that Morgana was likely behind it, Arthur would have realized that Dragoon really was trying to help, would have blamed Morgana (because dammit all, she’s behind everything anyway, I’d already be thinking everything bad that happened was her damn fault!) and all would have been well. But noooo. Instead, we leave Arthur thinking all magic is evil and turning him further away from ever releasing the ban on magic. How in the HELL are they planning on revealing Merlin’s magic now? At this point Arthur is more likely to stab Merlin through himself, regardless of how or why Merlin’s magic is revealed. They’re digging a pit so deep I fear they don’t realize how far it is to the surface, and their ladder isn’t tall enough to reach.

SPOILERS OVER!

Point is, Gaius is a retard and I find it hard for me to trust him any longer. My sister and I talked about how the next person they should kill of is Gaius. We feel terrible for it, but we both feel slighted by him (for Merlin, I guess, since he hasn’t actually done either of us wrong. Obviously, because he’s a fictional character) and Merlin’s got the dragon for all his magical advice too, and Merlin obviously has better judgment than the old man.

*huff huff*

I also just heard Old School by Hedley and I've decided it fits Merlin (the show, not the character) very well at this point in the characters' lives. Check it out here on youtube.

Anyways, moving on to more pleasant talk….

MY SISTER HAS A PUBLISHED BOOK!

This is the cover.

"Corinna Faune was just a farmer’s daughter, whose only regal connection was her runaway duke best friend, Alastar. But when her uncle returns home from the neighboring village with a horror tale and one glimmering rose, her entire life is interrupted. Now she’s the unwilling guest of a bad-tempered prince, who found himself at the wrong end of a witch’s curse. Her once normal life is now surrounded by magic with not one, not two, but three conniving witches involved, and none of their allegiances are clear. Can Corinna find the solution to the prince’s curse and return to her loved ones before they forget her? Can she break the spell before it becomes the end of an entire kingdom? And surrounded by unfamiliar faces and secrets, who can she trust to help her through it?"

Obviously, it's a Beauty and the Beast remake, but it is very unlike the story you're used to reading. She did a fantastic job (I'm so jealous) and you should all check it out!

You can buy it here from Amazon, here at Barnes & Noble, or here from it's online publisher. You can also follow my sister here on twitter and here at her blog, or here with her professional facebook.

In a quick hint to all my loyal Merlin readers who happen to be looking at this personal post (which I'm constantly surprised actually happens): A certain fic you all loved dearly and wanted a sequel to may have a future. But I'm not saying any more because that possible future is still a far ways off and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

And now I've got to go back to my life. I've got school in about an hour and I've got to go catch a bus.

As my sister would say,

Ciao tutti!

personal
