NAME: SATSUKI TAKADA
BIRTHDAY: MAY 01
BLOOD: O
GRADE: B
BRIEF BIO:
An only child born on Nishimajima, Satsuki has only ever known the island as home. As it happens, Satsuki's mother moved to the island to escape scandal on the mainland. She had been married to an older, wealthier gentleman, who passed away, leaving her a fortune. He had a family from a previous marriage who contested the will, and a court settlement largely leaned in their favour, for sake of family values. The gold-digger rumours never really subsided, so she moved to get away from all the sniping. Remarried a salaryman, took his surname, reluctantly agreed to have a daughter.
Satsuki's mother tries to keep her head down these days by working at the post office, but her nature tends to slip out in passive-aggressive behaviour, some of which rubbed off on the young Satsuki, inclining her to be a cautious, suspicious child growing up. She had some trouble making friends, and people often saw her as awkward and/or a little bit weird. Her father is loving but not very good with emotions, and her mother is ultimately selfish below the surface; the paternal family thoroughly enjoy bitching about Satsuki's mom. Although Satsuki never realised it when she was little, this stressed her out, and made her want to try and be nice to everyone, so as to stop them fighting. The end result is she ended up trying to be the kid who tries to make everybody get on with one another.
She was never very good at it. Combined with her other behaviour patterns, other children found her a bit of a loser; a preachy, self-obligated loser with her own sense of what's right and wrong. And that's a lot for kids to express. So she just made a handful of friends, and learned not to speak to people unless she had good reason to do so. She got into competitive gymnastics at an early age, and her mother has pride in parading her around, because Satsuki's quite good at it. She's come out of her shell more as she's gotten older, but the hang-ups never really go away...
The other thing she really got into was pen-palling. When she was about six, the school was put in for part of a ~*~government partnership thing~*~ to encourage rural schools to speak with inner-city schools, and vice versa. Everybody got paired up with some other kid as part of their curriculum. It's just that Satsuki is the only one who kept it up longer than necessary. She and Yayoi (the penpal) talked, exchanged stories; they showed photos of their homes and families, and stayed in touch; at their lowest ebb (age 11), once every 4 months or so. When older, they exchanged emails and messenger names. They talk like all teenage girls talk, but still like to send the occasional snail mail letter for old time's sake. Satsuki considers Yayoi her BBF, outside of school. Furthermore, Yayoi is from the city of Sendai, and Satsuki wants to visit one day. She can't yet because of island commitments, but it makes her driven to leave for something bigger when she's older.
APPEARANCE
As a rule, Satsuki doesn’t go overboard with her appearance. She brushes her hair until it’s smooth, and rarely applies make-up. However, she is fairly good-looking; people would probably refer to her as ‘cute’, rather than ‘pretty’. She is quite small, at a little under 5’1”, and has a fairly slender frame.
PERSONALITY
Generally, Satsuki won’t actively cause friction with people, though that’s not to say she gets along with anybody and everybody-there are people she dislikes. This said, she likes to keep things simple, and keeping things simple is just submitting to how people want her to behave. She hopes for some reward from acting like this, even if it's just companionship. Perhaps she's a little insecure? A little needy? A little paranoid?
On the other hand, she's extremely patient. She believes good things some to those who wait, and she is prepared to put her opinions to one side to cosy up with someone beneficial. She's still not brilliant in knowing what people are thinking, though.
Lastly, she has a bit of a competitive streak. She's just not particularly good at most things. Gymnastics is the exception, but she tends to get frustrated whenever somebody grinds her into the dirt.
STRENGTHS .
Agility-Naturally, this comes from her gymnastics. She has won a couple of regional competitions, so she's quite bendy, nimble and slight.
Motivated- She likes to see progress. She likes to know things are working out for the better, and enjoys working as part of a team. She's more ambitious than people tend to believe, and has been known to prefer the long game.
Diplomatic- She was always the peacemaker in the classroom as a little girl. She got punched in the nose a couple of times for it. Now they're all older, Satsuki doesn't get punched much, but she's still got that pesky streak of obligation.
Articulate-She has a way with words. She doesn't always use them to good effect, but she knows *how* to pick what she says, who she says them to, and a decent grasp of what might become of it. This is a skill she honed from the extensive pen-pal correspondence (especially since they advanced to email, etc).
WEAKNESSES
Avarice - There are few things that get Satsuki’s attention like material gain. Not just money, but any sort of useful footing. This means she can get blinkered from the bigger picture, and some people see her as an opportunist.
Loser - She's a bit of a loser. It's no secret she's a bit of a loser. She occasionally gets texts from her dad saying 'Loser'. Nothing else, just 'Loser'. I'm exaggerating, but you get the picture. She's good at some things, but isn't exactly one of the elite.
Spoiled - She has always effectively had everything she needed. This is a side-affect of her parents’ attitude to material wealth, but she won’t be comfortable roughing it, nor is she particularly resourceful, or strong in just “making do.” While not a brat, she’s an indoor cat for certain.
FAMILY
Hitomi Takada (Mother, 47) - works in the island’s post office. She had been married once before, to a wealthy, older businessman divorcee, who died of cancer when she was 23. The court ruled in favour of his ex-wife and her sons, and Hitomi decided to leave. She now leads a more modest life on the island. With work and parenting she does what’s needed of her, but always dreams of bigger, better things. She only works because it allows her the means with which she can indulge in luxuries. She's an adequate mother, but only had a child in the first place at the behest of her in-laws. She's a MILF.
Tadashi Takada (Father, 54) - works as a salaryman in the city. His wife helped him move out of his parents' home in the first instance, and he felt an obligation to re-establish himself as the breadwinner of the house, something Hitomi is more than willing to let him do. He’s progressed well enough for a man of his age, though nothing special either way. He had been pressured by his parents to sire their grandchildren, fertility problems have rendered this largely futile. Thus he dotes his daughter, though sometimes he worries that she is becoming uncannily like her mother as she grows up. Pleasant, but a little bit feckless.
Ryuuko Takada (Paternal Grandmother, 91) - a miserable old bitch who loves nothing better than to humiliate her daughter-in-law at any opportunity. Spiteful and manipulative, she loves causing Hitomi a headache (“that girl doesn’t know the meaning of hard work!”), and often tries to get Satsuki to grass her mother up (“so how often does she go out and leave you with your father, then?”) She’s hard work, and has her son under her thumb. Possibly through sheer terror.
Hiroji Takada (Paternal Grandfather, deceased at 88) - He died of a fourth stroke when Satsuki was eleven. Her mother later confided in her that she suspected Ryuuko had nagged him to death. A few years later, her father admitted he suspected the same thing. He was a warm, polite yet meek man; Satsuki never really knew him before his first two strokes. The third one rendered him wheelchair-bound, and needing assistance in feeding. Ryuuko often guilts her family by saying they didn’t come round often enough.
Yayoi Sugiyama (Penpal, 17) - Satsuki's longest and steadiest friend ever. They were introduced through a penpal scheme at age six, found they had enough in common to keep in touch, and, with the encouragement of her family, now communicates regularly by email and messenger. Is the eldest of three children (brother 7 years younger, sister 9 years younger). Father works for a bank, mother a housewife. Yayoi and her family are very pro-government and this has come to the fore as she's become older. Is ambitious as well, and aspires to be a doctor. She's still a girly girl, though. In a way, Satsuki considers her to be the sister she never had.
OVERNIGHT BAG
Nothing interesting. She can’t function for long without music, so she will have an MP3 player on her. And a phone, of course. And relevant chargers and batteries. The rest is simply overnight stuff.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
Gymnastics. Satsuki is on the gymnastics team, and will regularly work at her technique. She has represented the local area twice at Prefectural level: once aged twelve, and again aged thirteen, where she came second. She prefers equipment to floor.
Tea Ceremony - She likes to use it to calm down and meditate. Her mother told her it's a useful skill to learn.
Penpalling - It doesn't happen so much any more, but she used to enjoy the correspondence and how receiving a letter from a girl the other side of the Republic was like looking through a window into somebody else's life. Email is her conversation method of choice, but she still finds it relaxing to summarise the year so far in such a personal format.
Video games -- Satsuki has always enjoyed playing computer games to unwind, and admits she’s a casual gamer. Nothing hardcore, but she has a few consoles at home. It’s caused a few boring assignments to go uncompleted over the years.
The markets -- At the strong suggestion of her father's family (plus a few neighbours etc), she helps out around the island market stalls every other weekend. Ironically, they let her keep the cash register (it helps her with her numeracy skills, see). She doesn't pocket money, I promise. It's just now and again, the numbers don't quite add up. She can drive a hard bargain if need be.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR -
“I am satisfied with Satsuki's conduct and performance, although she has a habit of daydreaming in classes with no immediate application in the world. She has missed some assignments over the year, which have dragged her grades down somewhat.” Last year's end-of-year report
