I joined the local library today. It's the first time I have used a library for more than 10 years. Naturally, I had to borrow something despite the boxes and boxes of books I have at home, so I walked out with:
- Memoirs, the autobiography of Nana Mouskouri (yes, I know, but I like her!!!)
- On Literature, Umberto Eco, which I have wanted to read for a long time
- Fitness Walking, Therese Iknoian, to encourage me to keep moving even if I'm not running at the moment
- Strong Women Stay Young, Miriam E. Nelson and Sarah Wernick.
Miriam Nelson is a researcher at Tufts. She conducted a study on the use of high intensity weight training by post-menopausal women, including some in their seventies and eighties, and obtained some very dramatic results in just a few months. Bone loss was not only halted, but reversed. In addition, the women not only became stronger, but also more flexible, with improved balance, as well as receiving psychological benefits. All this on two 30-minute sessions per week based around a core group of 8 exercises, which can be done at home. I'm reading the book with total fascination and putting "watching item" marks on eBay for dumbbells and ankle weights of the sizes specified - eek! none of the paltry aerobic weights you get everywhere, she recommends variable ankle weights going up to 20 lbs per foot, and graded dumbbells up to 10 lbs each, with the option to move on eventually to 12 or 15 lbs.
