Had my first session with a new personal trainer today. I tried another person a couple of years ago. While she was very pleasant, and is generally considered to be the best at my gym, somehow it did not really work for me. Cathy, whom I saw today, leads the Tuesday night running group in which I participate and just from that is already aware of some of my issues. Also, since I see her in that context, it will be less easy for me to avoid her when I next start getting demotivated.

So, I got weighed, measured, treadmilled, fat and muscle calculated, hydration assessed, and the rest of the works. Since I'd done speedwork last night, the last few minutes of the treadmill session were tough, but fortunately Cathy only needed me at max. effort for a very short time! I was either within or just a tiny bit over the ideal range for my age and height for each parameter that was measured. The verdict is that I have an excellent base from which to improve and that most of the reasons why I haven't improved much so far are probably in my head. Some heart rate monitor-based running is going to be prescribed as well as the occasional dreadmill session (yuk!), plus some contortionist stuff, bouncy ball stuff and weighty bits.

I must admit that when I stand back from myself and observe, I find the idea of a not very athletic 52-year-old consulting a personal trainer a tad amusing, somewhat precious one might say. Ah well, never mind.
