from chapter 34
His shoes clicked on the planks of the boardwalk leading towards the largest patch of rocky beach, but Jean suddenly stopped. “I’ve been looking for you.”
Several feet behind him stood a woman with long flowing black hair drifting behind her in the shoreline wind and a maniacal smirk plastered across her small features. “Oh?”
Now was the time to confront the Cloud Woman. No turning back now. “No mysterious clouds this time, I see.”
She stared at his back. Jean was so much taller than she was, but that didn’t deter her in the least. She had plans for him. “Tricks don’t seem to work on you.”
“So you have been paying attention.” She was more observant than Jean had first thought. She wasn’t just someone bent on killing off Raitei’s friends. No, she was much craftier than that. She had a plan and that was what Jean wanted to know. He needed to tread carefully, however, as he knew she incredibly powerful, whoever she was.
“You’ve caused me so much trouble,” she frowned. The wind whipped around her, throwing her long hair about in a rather eerie manner. She could smell the magic in the wind even this far. The smell was horrible to her, like rotten fruit. “Quite unusual for the Healer to know how to dispel illusions.” The most unusual skill he could ever have, she reasoned. Traditionally, the Healer knew white magic, named after the color it produced and which generally encompassed healing, protection, and reparation. So far Jean had exhibited these skills and one more - dispel - a skill that other members of the Team had but not the Healer. Was it learned or perhaps was he a cross-breed of members? Whichever the case, it was disgusting and made him even more of a nuisance.
“The standard definitions of the roles no longer apply,” Jean pointed out to her, still unmoved, his back to her.
She wasn’t sure what irritated her the most. He hadn’t turned to see her, but she knew she couldn’t launch an attack on him. There was something about Jean which allowed him different abilities than the traditional, preventing her from doing damage to him at all. Well, not yet, at least.
from chapter 40
Sophi stared at Kazra, receiving a smirk in return. Kazra was much taller than Sophi, which was quite apparent, now the two were staring down one another no more than a foot apart, but that didn't stop Sophi one bit. She wasn't that tall, but she knew how to hold her ground.
“You entered the contest.” Sophi glared.
“Well 'course I did,” Kazra replied rather smugly. “Why wouldn't I?”
Raitei, Yuki, and Jean stared blankly at the two girls.
“What contest is this that has them so heated?” Raitei inquired.
Yuki shrugged.
“Let's just hope they don't start throwing desks,” Jean snarked.
“That barely seems fair!” Sophi shot back.
“Jus' 'cuz I've met 'im in person?” Kazra inquired very well knowing the answer. “So have you.” Kazra very well knew Sophi had met Haenim as well.
Sophi gaped for a moment, then folded her arms. “I'm still the bigger fan, and I'll prove it!”
Raitei attempted to bury himself in his book. “They're arguing about Haenim...”
“In that case,” Jean added, “I'm rather surprised they haven't started throwing desks.”
“We'll jus' see 'bout that, now won't we?” Kazra shot back, smirking.
“Tonight,” Sophi stated firmly. “We'll see just who is the bigger fan and who gets those tickets.”
“This'll be the definitive proof 'a who's the bigger fan, kay?” Kazra smirked.
“Deal!” Sophi returned, then thought, << whatever definitive means... >>
from chapter 43
The world seemed to go silent as Haenim closed his eyes. The roar of the crowd had quieted, the disbelief of the announcers had faded away. The world seemed to slow down, if only for a moment. That's when he could see it. Barely, but it was there.
He could see the wind.
Suddenly his eyes snapped open as he shifted his weight, gliding out of the roundhouse then gracefully dodging the follow up. Haenim resumed his stance at the conclusion of the graceful stride.
Carmina's jaw dropped as did most of the crowd. Where did that sudden dodge come from?
Pak was probably the only one who knew how much Haenim relied on strategy and his ability to analyze the situation. Pak also knew how fast Haenim was capable of finding patterns and exploiting the weaknesses. He'd done it in the nationals, and he was positive that Haenim was doing it here, even if there was an ace up his sleeve. A very interesting and unusual ace.
Carmina was determined to take Haenim down. She resumed her stance and then proceeded to barrage Haenim with a series of quick, sharp kicks. Haenim dodged each of them in a very systematic manner, dodging this way and that, testing her reflexive ability as well as her ability to follow his movements. In the process he took several kicks to the shoulder, but he found a plan.
Carmina paused. Was he trying to wear her down? If that were the case, it sure was working. She'd have to end this fast. But as she prepared another attack, she noticed his stance was a bit different. His leading hand was lower, more weight on his back foot, less evenly distributed than before. That kid was planning something, and Carmina wasn't about to allow him to do it.
With a quick shift in weight, Carmina launched a different kick, mid-ranged, aimed at disabling his hip. Seeing the change, Haenim hopped backwards, but just enough that he didn't place himself outside the ring, then with a quick shift on his toes, he swung out to the side. He placed his hand on the ground then, using the momentum, he swung his leg around sharply, aiming for her knee.
This entire match, Carmina had not thrown one single punch. Every move was part of a large arsenal of sharp, swift kicks. However, take out the tower, disable the arsenal. And that tower was wide open.
