Before you read these lyrics, go at this knowing that I have no problem with people having things they want, I have a problem with people taking things away from other people. I love the saying "live simply, so others may simply live." While it's nigh impossible to do much, the effort is still important. I can't donate money or buy things for charities, etc. because I have to pay student loans, but I go on freerice.com and hope that works. I recycle as much as I can, and I don't use plastic bags anymore unless I don't have my reusable bags (which is uncommon, as I have some in my purse and usually bring others). If even small steps like these are taken, I really think we can make a difference. I know Craig's all about using everything he can, he's loathe to throw things out when something can be done with them. I'd rather not throw things out at all since they apparently don't really let things decompose even in landfills, but that makes for smelly apartments. >.< My point is that we should all make an effort and stop being lazy, selfish slobs. Because that's how much of the world sees us, and I'm inclined to agree for the most part.
What really got me in these lyrics, though, is a line near the end about a peace sign on a license plate. Really, how commercialized has that become? What does it really mean to everyone? I know I'm probably a horrible example, I do have a bad temper but I try to not let it take over. I get mad but I've never been in a real fight. I don't think I have it in me to be really violent unless it's justified. But the point here is that even something like a peace sign means little to people anymore, and it's complete hypocrisy most of the time, as exemplified in these lyrics. It's something "cool." The meaning behind a lot of things are getting lost, and it's really depressing when you stop and think about it.
Also I am reminded of the phrase, "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention!"
Ok, so, onto the lyrics that spurned this rant:
Ben Folds - All U Can Eat
Son look at all the people in this restaurant
What d'you think they weigh?
And out the window to the parking lot
At their SUV's taking all of the space
They give no fuck
They talk as loud as they want
They give no fuck
Just as long as there's enough for them
Gotta get on the microphone down at Wal-mart
Talk about some shit that's been on my mind
Talk about the state of this great of this nation of ours
People look to your left, yeah look to your right
They give no fuck
They buy as much as they want
They give no fuck
Just as long as there's enough for them
[Piano Solo]
(oooaaahhhhhhhh)
(oooaaahhhhhhhh)
Son look at the people lining up for plastic
Wouldn't you like to see them in the national geographic?
Squatting bare-assed in the dirt eating rice from a bowl
With a towel on their head and maybe a bone in their nose
See that asshole with a peace sign on his license plate
Giving me the finger and running me out of his lane
God made us number one because he loves us the best
Well maybe He should go bless someone else for a while, give us a rest
[They give no...]
Yeah and everyone can see
[They give no...]
We've eaten all that we can eat
[Piano Solo]
