So
elvisvf101 said to me, "I want you to write a SilMil drabble about the first time Jadeite brings Mars a pomegranate."
Then this happened!
The Princess Mars sat at the long oaken table, her normally perfect posture sagging slightly; she placed her elbows on the the table, nestled her chin atop her laced fingers, and sighed.
“You are aware that this is utterly ridiculous, are you not?” Doleful amethyst eyes looked up at Lord Jadeite from under a fringe of thick, raven lashes.
“Well, they are nothing if not ridiculous, so I would say it suits.” He shrugged a shoulder, careless.
“You are also aware that Jupiter would be a much better choice for this task, yes?” She looked away from him, inspecting the crowded table before her, nose winkling slightly.
“And I would have asked her if she were here, or if I was not under the most rigid of time constraints.” Jadeite pulled out the chair next to her, sinking into it and slithering down until his eyes were level with the tabletop. “Can we stop being so formal now? I think the steward is gone.”
She rolled her eyes. “If you will.”
“Good, I’m too tired to be formal right now.” He rubbed his face and sat up. “I’ve been scouring the marketplace since dawn for a proper assortment of ‘good Terran food’.” He snorted. “You know for all his flowery words to Serenity, Endymion really can sound like a moron sometimes.”
“She’s the same way. They’re just in looooove,” Mars sing-songed. “So now I have to figure what she’s actually going to like out of this mass of food?”
“That’s the plan, get testing.”
“I really wish Jupiter was here,” she muttered, picking up a dried up, shriveled thing that looked like it came from a stable rather than a market. “What is this?”
“A fruit called a ’date.’ It’s sweet, you’ll like it.”
“I’m not eating it.”
“You have to.”
“No, I don’t. I’m telling you Serenity wouldn’t give it a second glance. It’s out.” She sat it down carefully, rubbing her fingers together, hoping to get rid of the sticky residue the hideous piece of fruit had left behind.
The next few items -- grapes, blueberries, and a bitter yellow thing called a lemon -- were not as terrifying as the date had been, and all had a certain quality she could find appealing. Though she ruled out the lemon for Serenity’s basket.
“What about that one?” She pointed to a circular object with a flowering top that reminded her a bit of a crown, however what had initially drawn her to it was its deep, vibrant red color.
“That’s a pomegranate.” Jadeite reached out, plunking the fruit from the center of the table and flicked it into the air; it soared high above the table to land in his other hand. He held the pomegranate out to her with a smile.
She took it from him and inspected it closely, her fingers running over the smooth, but seemingly tough skin. “Do you bite?”
“No, break it open.” He seemed intrigued with this now, and she wrinkled her nose at him. Mars picked up the knife at her side and stabbed the fruit, sawing slightly to make a line in the skin. Red juice leaked out from where the blade was embedded, running down her hand and arm.
“It’s bleeding!” she cried.
“It’s just the juice, the seeds are red, too.” Jadeite had settled back, elbow on the arm of his chair and his cheek resting against his fist. His posture spoke of exhaustion, languid and lethargic, but his eyes were bright as he watched her, amused.
Mars eyed him for a moment, wary if he might be playing a trick, then gently broke it apart, revealing off-white flesh and hundreds upon hundreds of tiny, plump seeds.
“You eat those,” he said. “The fleshy part is bitter.”
“The whole thing?” Mars ever so carefully extracted one of the seeds from along the edge, but before she could pop it into her mouth, Jadeite stopped her.
“Not like that. Here.” He took the pomegranate from her hands, quartering one of the halves, taking away some of the outer skin. He held out the quarter to her. “Take a bite.”
She narrowed her eyes and slowly took it from him. “Are you sure?”
“Where’s your sense of adventure?”
“Fine!” Mars said haughtily and took a large bite of the pomegranate. The seeds exploded in her mouth, tangy and sweet. She was helpless to stop the sticky juice from dribbling down her chin and neck, leaving a burgundy trail against her milky skin. She lifted her hand to wipe her chin and glared at Jadeite.
“At least you were already wearing red.” He grinned at her, not even bothering to hide his mad giggling.
“You’re an ass.”
“What? Red is your color.” Jadeite shrugged and leaned toward her. “Though you missed a spot.” He reached out, using his thumb to trace her lip, smudging until the juice stained her lips.
He sat back to admire his handy work, licking his thumb with a wicked grin, “Delicious.”
Mars shook her head and took a deep breath. She turned her attention back to the table and pointed out several different fruits. “Those for Serenity’s basket.”
“Not the pomegranate?” Jadeite asked, surprised.
“Serenity always wears white, it would stain.” She pushed back her chair and stood up, the front of her dress sticking ever so slightly to her chest. “Now, won’t you be a good boy and come help me change out of this mess?”
