Nitpicking Season Four

Oct 08, 2011 14:32

I'd expected a dull season, but I didn't think it was at all.  But I do have a few things I have to get off my chest after seeing True Blood Season Four.

Timeline:  This has to be my major peeve.  In the first season, I'll be generous and say the storyline was about two weeks long.  Season Two, maybe a week or so.  Season Three, a couple of days.  I could be pedantic and actually check, but I'd rather guess.  This seems to be entirely ignored or outright forgotten!  By the end of Season Two, after going out for maybe three or four weeks, Sookie agrees to Bill's marriage proposal.  That's a short relationship that's already had a few hiccups - a great way to start a committed life together.  Jason kills someone at the end of Season Two... and he really doesn't seem to care at all in Season Three.  That seems rather callous.  It's like the writers think that a lot of time has passed for the characters when it really hasn't.

This is SO obvious in Season Four.  I can easily buy the being gone for a year thing and everyone's reaction EXCEPT Sookie's.  To her, it felt like she was gone an hour or so.  So she should still be extremely upset with Bill, not being all nice to him.  I would have thought she'd be grieving over the loss of their relationship, but she doesn't seem to be.  I'd think it was denial, but I can't help feeling that would be expecting a bit much of the writers.

Sookie:  I don't get this girl, or what the writers are trying to do with her.  In Season One, it was as though they wanted her to be like Book Sookie, but different.  They just seem to pick the wrong points for her to stand apart from Book Sookie.  I like that she veered off on her own, but laser hands?  Really?  The telepathy is from fairies?  How does that work if her grandfather was telepathic too?  Hopefully it'll be explained, but mostly I wanted to slap her for being so nice to Bill when he was such an asshole to her.  I'm a Sookie/ Eric shipper from the books, so I was happy to see them together in the show, but it didn't quite jell somehow.  Maybe next season.

As for choosing neither of them because she loves both of them?  Sorry, I'm too cynical for that bullshit.  One admitted that he hooked up with you because he was ordered to, though he does love you, but he cheated on you.  The other guy, you've had a tense relationship with because he's been a bit of a jackass to you and he hasn't been himself for the past few DAYS.  DAYS!  That's a crush, infatuation, lust!  Not love, dammit.

Bill:  Did not expect his storyline at all.  Which was great actually!  I liked that he'd 'gotten over' Sookie.  The whole Portia thing seemed a bit pointless though.  I actually think Bill makes a good King.  I rather liked Bill this season.  He's getting more and more ruthless as the show progresses.

Eric:  Well, I expected the amnesia storyline.  I didn't expect him to be quite so whipped afterwards though.  Frankly, I would have been avoiding Sookie for a bit because he's pretty much got REBOUND GUY stamped on his forehead.  I can't figure out his obsession with Sookie, though he had a whole year to fantasise about it.  Heh.  Actually, I one idea, but I'd already written that into Undaunted, but again, it's one that is probably expecting too much of the writers.  He treats Pam pretty shabbily through the whole season, which is harsh.

My god, Alexander Skarsgård is gorgeous naked though.

Witches:  I thought it was good until Antonia was all "No, wait, I'm a good guy!  I just want to help people!".  After being a murderous bitch, I thought Marnie got off too lightly, which irritated me.  She'd been picked on her whole life and then when she'd been given a little bit of power, she takes people hostage, kills them, and isn't sorry about it.  You know what that sounds like?  Those kids that go on shooting sprees in schools.  Yet Marnie got forgiven.

Being able to control the vampires like that was pretty awesome though.

I still hate Holly with a passion though.  Everytime she's on screen I want to slap her for 'helping' Arlene with that abortion.

Jason:  He got over being raped pretty well.  I thought he'd grown up a bit too, until he slept with his best friend's girl.  That was a bit of a dick move, but these things happen.

Jessica.  I like where her character is going.  It's like she's embracing what she is.  Sad that she and Hoyt didn't work out though, they started off so sweet.

Pam: I loved her take charge approach, but I felt sorry for her when Eric was such a bastard to her.

Tommy and Sam:  I really couldn't care less about this storyline.  No idea why Maxine would take Tommy in though.

Alcide and Debbie: I felt sorry for Debbie.  Alcide kept going behind her back and she felt insecure.  He knew that she was upset, but did it anyway.

Lafayette and Jesus:  The medium thing was too drawn out, otherwise I loved these two.  I was very upset that Jesus died, I thought he was great.

Tara:  God, I've hated Tara since Season Two.  I thought we'd seen the last of her when she drove off last season, but no.  She was brought back to pretty much make sarcastic remarks the whole time.  At least she died doing something useful.

Other characters:  Crystal, Arlene, Terry, Andy.... who the hell cares?  Why was the baby storyline that important?  Once Jason didn't turn, was Crystal even mentioned again?  Sometimes it feels like there are too many storylines going on.

Other Deaths: Hated how Sophie Anne went down - it was too easy, yet so clever on Bill's half.  She was so much fun.  Didn't see Nan being killed at all, so that was a surprise.

Best moments: Pam's breakdown at the end and her cuddle with Ginger.  Any scene with Eric naked.  Obviously.  Godric's cameo.  Lafayette and Jesus's goodbye.  Vampire Black Ops.  Rene warning Arlene about Terry.

Thoughts for next season: Russell, Russell, Russell!  Also, will the fairy world be explained?  Not interested in Terry's history with the guy from Felicity.

And that's it.
