One of the sites I troll, asked the question. Why do you like to go to/look at abandoned places.
This was my answer:
I have always been fascinated with abandoned broken down places. I cannot remember when it started. A lot of people on here have touched on some of the reasons I love it. I to am a lurker. I have recently had two babies and do not have the time nor energy to go out and explore much as I want to. My heart leaps with excitement every time I see an abandoned place out by the road that I wanna explore. However, when you have two kids in the car it is less than conducive to doing so. Soooooo I live vicariously through you all.
Here are a few that are high points for me:
1) I get excited about seeing the abandonment be it buildings, factories, houses, or just stuff, and I wanna know the what/who/why/how things happened. I guess it is like being a detective, looking at the things left behind and making conjectures about what happened, why they left in a hurry.
2) I love to see the decay, how things are being taken back over by nature. I love the textures and colors that the decay creates, for instance the many myriad of colors that rust will leave on say a wall, the patter it leaves behind as it is deposited on the wall.
3) I love to see things thrive in a condition that boggles the mind that anything could live in. Like a cesspool of factory waste, or for that matter something that died in said cesspool due to toxicity.
4) The morbid part of me gets excited at the possibility that there are or were still inhabitants in a site being explored.
5) Not nearly the last but one of the big reasons I love abandoned places is, my love for dystopian society stories. (e.g. movies:Equilibrium,Total Recal, Running Man, Mad Max, Serenity, Robo Cop, Clockwork Orange, Children of Men, Logans Run, I am legend, and 28 days later, to name only a fraction of movies on the list. games: fallout 2, Bioshock1, Bioshock 2, Halflife2, Resident Evil, Silent and Silent Hill to name just a fraction of the games)
I love to imagine how I would survive in a world where everyone/everything was destroyed, a you have to build off of abandoned places. You have to work through a authoritarian or totalitarian form of government/society that has risen out of the ashes.
Thus ends my crazy rant. I hope that answers your curiosity a bit.
