A lot has changed since I was a regular on ole LJ. MJ and I finally got out of the small shithole town that we felt trapped in. Last November, we moved to Kansas City, MO. While it may not be the Pacific NW, as we had hoped, it's been a definite improvement. KC is actually a pretty cool city, though the people take some getting used to. We live in the Westport neighborhood, which is one of the oldest parts of Kansas City, but also one the "hip" neighborhoods. We found a cute as hell place that is extremely dog friendly. It's a post war complex that was completely gutted and renovated last year. It still has the old hardwoods and brick, but brand new steel appliances, travertine tile, etc. There are 3 dog runs on site, a pet wash, and a 24 hour on call vet. We're within walking distance of tons of bars and restaurants. It worked out well.

I spent the first 6 months still working in Iola. I'd leave early Monday morning, spend the week working and staying at my parent's house, and head back Friday afternoon. It was incredibly stressful, tiring, and put a huge strain on my emotional health as well as our relationship, including a few things I'd prefer not to go into. Finally in April, the bank determined that there really was no position for me any longer, so I was let go. It was a relief after a very tough winter between MJ and I, but it's taken until this week to get things straightened out financially. I haven't been able to find work, but my unemployment kicks in this week and I'm debating returning to school.

MJ is the executive chef and kitchen manager at the Hamburger Mary's that opened here in December. For those of you, unfamiliar, the restaurant was originally one of the first openly gay businesses in the country. The first was in San Francisco and branched from there. While, this is not the same owners, it's become a big part of queer history, including mentions in the Tales of The City Series. He's a pretty integral part of the business and has kind of become the face of it. He works extremely hard and has received a few write ups in newspapers, etc for his menu. He loves it and it's done a lot of good for his career. It's nice to see him doing something he loves, finally.

That's kind of a not so quick catch up on things. I'm sure I'll have more details and updated pics once I get back in the hang of this. I have started my own blog, Rough Trade Saint, on Blogspot, so I may cross post from there. I'm hoping between these two, I will get back in the habit of writing.
