I just happened to see Dave Zoller play piano at a bar last night... a local jazzist who captured my attention about five years ago, when I had to write a paper about a live music performance for a humanities class.
I wasn't so sure at first, watching him set up his keyboard; but then I asked him his name, and he said it was Dave. Excited, but also trying to seem excited, I said unto him, "Thou art Dave Zoller! I've seen you play with AJ6."
He nodded, said yeah, and went back to his stuff. The set was pretty good on its own, but I couldn't get over the fact that we two have been as planets ever since I first saw him-- destined to realign after a long and meaningless period of time. "AJ6: The Dave Zoller Experience" remains one of my favorite school paper experiences, the perfect example of staying up late and coming up with something worthwhile from start to finish in one shot. Then laughing, and turning it in with confidence. Then the teacher saying, "Boy, that Dave Zoller sounded like a real mess, like he was on his last legs," and me laughing some more, and thinking, "I got you, lady. I got you!"
