I've spent the last few days being very pissed off at redneck breeders. one in particular seems to think that this breed is *special* and wouldn't get along with cats even if introduced while young, because hunting is so "in their blood", and that they wouldn't be happy if they weren't hunting or trailing or doing some sort of work running around

Weimaraners and beagles are terrible house dogs and tend to attack people and other animals if not allowed to hunt and retrieve occasionally. Then again, you argue about pit bulls, so you obviously think that environment trumps all...

if not trained properly when young, yes, they can be total nightmares. the sad truth is that most modern families don't take the time to properly train their dogs; mine was one of these. we had 5 or 6 dogs over the years, and every one of them was played with for about two weeks and then stuck in the backyard forever.

in the end, a breed only represents a set of skills or characteristics. any of them can be overridden by training, because dogs are pack animals and respond to their alphas' desires over any instinct they might have. this also depends on the individual dog-- some dogs are just fucking neurotic and while they could be trained, it's not a job for your average person-- but for the most part, this is true.

I disagree entirely. And pit bulls are, again, the perfect example. The only breed of dog I know of that was bred specifically for fighting. Sure, the great majority of them live their entire lives without incident, but that's most likely because the great majority of pit bull owners take the time and care to beat and starve them so that they act mean, and people know to stay away from them. It's always the dogs that are lovingly cared for and specially trained to be nice to people that one day snap and kill a few kids and an old lady or two. Specific breeds have specific instincts, and the more those instincts are repressed, the more likely they'll come back to bite you in the ass.

Working breeds need to work. They don't necessarily have to do the specific job they're bred for, but it should be something close. Hounds need to track, collies need to herd, retrievers need to retrieve. Have you ever met a sled dog?

first of all, "pit bull" is an ambiguous term that can refer to many different breeds and mixed breeds of dog having similar physical characteristics, so any sweeping generalizations about "pit bulls" are basically meaningless
