I've spent the last few days being very pissed off at redneck breeders. one in particular seems to think that this breed is *special* and wouldn't get along with cats even if introduced while young, because hunting is so "in their blood", and that they wouldn't be happy if they weren't hunting or trailing or doing some sort of work running around

in the end, a breed only represents a set of skills or characteristics. any of them can be overridden by training, because dogs are pack animals and respond to their alphas' desires over any instinct they might have. this also depends on the individual dog-- some dogs are just fucking neurotic and while they could be trained, it's not a job for your average person-- but for the most part, this is true.

Working breeds need to work. They don't necessarily have to do the specific job they're bred for, but it should be something close. Hounds need to track, collies need to herd, retrievers need to retrieve. Have you ever met a sled dog?
