I noticed on the
torchwood_three newsletter that someone has set up a community called
gwenwood (yeah, I know). On
torchwood_three , they gave the strapline for this new comm as 'Because the Rift still exists. And Gwen is ready' (this is not the strapline on the actual comm). That got me thinking.
As far as I remember, in all the five episodes of CoE, the only time the Rift is mentioned is when Agent Johnson conjectures the reason for Jack's immortality -- that it is tied to the Hub, 'that Rift thing'. She does not display any knowledge about the Rift or how it functions. Then she has the Hub blown up. Now from the canon of S1 and S2 (and some episodes from Doctor Who) we are given to understand that explosions near the Rift are a bad idea, since it could cause untold destruction. Yet in CoE, there are no Rift-related repurcussions after the explosion. No ruptures in time and space, no futuristic humans falling through, nothing. Not even a stray Weevil.
If you wish to accept CoE as canon, then you'll have to accept that the Rift is now dead, sealed off. And that takes away the very raison d'etre of Torchwood Cardiff. In such a situation, Gwen may be ready, but there'll be nothing for her to do.
We have all heard of fandom or fanon being Jossed, but this is the first time I have seen actual canon being Jossed by its own creator!
