A League of Their Own story

Fandom:  A League of Their Own
Pairing:  Kit/OFC
Rating:  PG
Spoilers:  This will make more sense if you've seen the movie.
Summary:  Kit has a roommate named Lucy.
Notes:  I always pictured Kit as a dyke in the movie, even though a husband is mentioned at the end.  Whatever.  This could still totally have happened.  Lucy is my creation.  Remember at the end of the movie when Kit was all, "I'm sticking around here to get a job" or whatever?  Yeah, in my mind she got a roommate too.  "Roommate."  Heh.

Kit isn’t surprised, really, when she kisses her roommate a week after the season has ended.  Her sister is on her way back to Oregon, and Kit has been enthusiastically savoring being alone for the first time in her life.  The feeling is fantastic and intoxicating.  True, there isn’t anyone to keep her out of trouble.  The upside of this, of course, is that now she can get into all kinds of trouble.

Somewhere in the back of her mind she is marveling at her own courage when she presses her lips awkwardly to Lucy’s.  Her ears are ringing, and her heart is beating alarmingly quickly.  Then Lucy opens her mouth, and Kit does too.  The only thing she is aware of now is Lucy.  When they finally break apart to breathe they just stare at one another.

Lucy is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed confection of a girl in a black skirt suit and heels.  Kit, perpetually in disarray and unaware that Lucy finds this charming, feels off balance in her denim trousers and plain white shirt.  She takes a step back, breaking eye contact. Tries to gather her thoughts.

"Lucy…” she begins.  Unsure what to say, wondering how she can get Lucy to kiss her again.

Lucy looks at her warily and stands a little straighter.  She squares her shoulders, and Kit wonders if she is getting ready to rebuff Kit if Kit dares to try to kiss her a second time.  For her part, Lucy looks at Kit and thinks about what it would mean to kiss her again.  She realizes that doing so would make her the first person in Kit’s life not to let her down.  She saw hope in Kit’s eyes as their lips parted, and she will not, will not be the latest in a succession of people who disappointed Kit and taught her not to hope too much.

The room is so still, and the tension is so thick that when Lucy takes a step forward Kit jumps nervously.  But her eyes stay on Lucy's, and she stands her ground.  Lucy thinks Kit looks young and scared and more aroused than anyone Lucy has ever seen.  Kit’s cheek is hot under Lucy’s hand, and her red hair is softer than it looks.  When Lucy’s hand slides around to grasp the back of Kit’s neck, Kit slumps a little in relief and meets Lucy's mouth hungrily, joyously.

They stand for several minutes, kissing.  Kit rests her hands gently on Lucy’s hips.  Lucy, taller, wraps her arms around Kit’s shoulders.  At some point, the tension evaporates, and the kisses become better, more affectionate and fun.

When Kit pulls away, she does so reluctantly and only because she knows she has a team meeting to attend.  Lucy knows that she has to go and nearly laughs at the stricken expression on Kit’s face.

“I’ll be here when you get back.”

Kit grins shyly.  “Okay.  I, uh, shouldn’t be long.”

Lucy nods and walks to the sofa, shedding her suit jacket and heels in the process.  When she looks at Kit again, Kit’s eyes are wide and she looks dazed.

“Kit?”

“Mmm?”

“You should go.”

Kit snaps out of her reverie and raises her eyes from Lucy’s stocking-clad legs.  “Right.  Yeah.  I’ll just…won’t be long.  I should...  Okay.  Uh, bye.”

She backs slowly out the door and closes it behind her.  Lucy walks over and picks up Kit’s keys from the small table next to the door.  Kit sheepishly opens the door to find Lucy holding her keys.  Lucy holds them out to her but doesn’t let go right away, instead leaning forward and planting a quick kiss on Kit’s lips.  Kit smiles hugely and makes herself walk away.  Lucy closes the door and smiles to herself, anticipating welcoming Kit back home again.
