Silence. Serenity was still as death. The atmosphere mirrored her mood perfectly. The hallways leading to the bridge felt cold and ashen; it was another reminder of all of the things that had been lost.
Zoë curled up in the co-pilot chair and stared at the gaping hole where the pilot’s chair had once stood. It was gone now--they had to take it out when they removed his body. She thought she had cried all of her tears but the missing piece of Serenity hit the wound in her heart hard.
“Wash, baby,” she whispered. “I need you. I don’t want to go on without you.”
It was then she noticed the plastic dinosaur perched on the console. She reached for it and brought it to her chest. This was a piece of her husband, and she couldn’t help but smile at the memories that arose. Wash loved those stupid toys. He once told her that they reminded him of the time he spent as a POW and how they kept him sane.
“It’ll all be okay, wife.”
“Husband?”
There was no reply. She sighed as she replaced the dinosaur. Wash was gone but she had to carry on. Alone.
