Jayne was in a sour mood, and nothing was going to pull him out of it. He didn’t want to make nice; and if the rest of the crew left him alone as they usually do when he gets like this, then he wouldn’t have to deal with anyone for a few hours--maybe even a whole day. So it came as a shock to him when he crossed the kitchen area to find everyone grinning over at him.
“What?” he growled.
Even that didn’t knock a grin off of a face. In fact, Mal’s grew even wider.
“Happy birthday, Jayne!”

River could feel the giddiness flowing through Kaylee’s body as she hummed around the kitchen. She leaned in close to the round object Kaylee was fiddling around with until she was inches away from it.
“It’s Jayne’s birthday,” Kaylee told her. “And we’re celebratin’ it.”
She didn’t move as she glanced up at her. The smell from the cake was delicious and she didn’t want to move away from it.
“Date of birth was yesterday,” River informed her.
Kaylee grinned. “His mama sent him this cake. It only just arrived. A day late won’t hurt none. B’sides, it’s a surprise!”
