They had a history.

It was long and it was dark and it was vivid and it was cold and it was hot and it was many, many other things.

‘But damn it…’ he thought.

One thing it wasn’t was over.

His story-and hers.

For them it would never be over-he wouldn’t allow it.

In the middle of the night, Sakura ran down the stairs to answer the hammering at her front door. Just as she opened it, a flash of lightning illuminated the sky behind the dark-haired visitor.

“Sasuke-kun! You scared me. Is there something wrong at the hospital?”

He glared at her and stepped into her entryway, slamming the door behind him. She pulled the top of her robe together uncomfortably, unsettled by his silence.

“Sasuke-kun?” she asked uncertainly.

“Who was he?” he asked darkly.

“Who was…who?”

She jumped when he smashed his hand into the wall next to her head. “Don’t fuck with me,” he growled.

She twitched in irritation and straightened her spine, standing to her full height-not so intimidating, as she only came up to his chin, but she wasn’t afraid of his bluster.

“Get out.” She turned to go back up the stairs and he grabbed her arm, stopping her.

“Naruto said you were with some guy today.”

“I was at work today.” She didn’t care what he thought about her having lunch with a friend. He’d lost the right to dictate any part of her life.

“Sakura-” he warned.

She shook her head. “We are nothing…those were your words, Sasuke-kun. Our past is only that-history.” Hiding her pain, she turned away from him.

“From now on, I will talk, smile, laugh, have lunch, or anything else I want to do with any other man I want to, and you will mind your own business. We-are-nothing!” Her voice cracked and she shoved him off, marching back upstairs. “You know the way out.”

Back in her room, Sakura crawled into bed knowing there’d be no more sleep for her that night, probably for many nights.

Why?

Why did he always do this? Pull her in, and at the same time, push her away? She didn’t have the energy to care anymore. If he wanted to be alone then so be it.

But why did she still want to cry?

“Sakura.” Sasuke stood in the doorway of her room.

“I can’t do it anymore.” She wouldn’t face him. “I’m tired of being discarded,” she said softly.

He hated hearing her say those words. “It was me, not you. I’m an asshole.”

“I agree.” Sakura twisted her hand in the hem of her shirt.

“You deserve better, Sakura.” He reached out to touch her hair and stopped himself. If he touched her again, he’d never, ever be able to let her go.

“I deserve to be loved.”

“You do.”

She stood up to face him. “I deserve to be happy.”

“Aa,” he agreed with his whole heart.

“Then make me happy already, damn you.”

He pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her. Sasuke buried his face in her hair and inhaled the sweet, pure scent that represented warmth, love, caring, and humanity-all the things he thought were missing in him. Images of her flashed through his mind and suddenly, the thought of her not being in his life made him realize that she’d always been his strength.

“We are not nothing, Sakura…you are everything.”

Together, they had a history-and a future.
