Note: Arigato Gozimasu to my Shinigami Twin 01 (Hee-chan) for beta-ing this for me! We typically work together on fanfiction, but given her not so much interest in the Naruto she just helped edit! Danke schoen! Love ya! And then this as you should be able to tell by process of elimination was done by me - Shinigami Twin 04 (Quatre Raberba Winner)! So! The two halves of the whole of rainbowfragment are still working together! ^_^

Now to the fic:

Your Gift Called Loneliness:

A chill passed through all the sorrowful, disheartened young ninja of Team 7. The young, developing woman of the group glanced about at the others' faces, reflecting on her own failure. She had hoped beyond hope that they could successfully return Sasuke to Konoha, but now she wondered if they should be attempting in the first place. Sai's feelings mirrored hers, but his sorrowful feelings were masked beneath his blank expression well learned from his training. The only reason the others knew he felt as they did was that he failed just as much as they had, and within his dark usually clear murky eyes floated traces of dissatisfaction.  Their temporary sensei sat quiet, but alert. He had expected this outcome, but still he couldn't help the depression sinking into him; these children's' bright hopes had even uplifted his beliefs.

Of all of Team 7 the most dejected had to be Naruto Uzumaki. He hadn't risen from his spot on the ground amongst fallen leaves of greens, browns, and oranges since he had first sat. Their sensei had attempted to give the group a moment to gather themselves before moving on to report to Godaime their mission's failure.

Several hours later, the blonde stood. His head cast down allowed the shadow of his bright hair to conceal his eyes. Sakura and Sai reacted instantly and glanced up in their companion's general direction.

"Naruto-kun…" The gentle female whispered, her voice filled with concern and wariness.

"I need to go pee." Came the abrupt, nearly harsh response. The tone left no question of his actions, but clearly gave the others the underlying meaning: "I want to be alone."

He never looked at them for permission, and their escort never stopped to question his actions or words. Naruto just turned in the opposite direction and began walking alone to a more secluded destination. Eyes of shimmering blue never left the sight of the leaves and dirt of the forest floor. The irises' color wavered, the glistening appearance undulating, imitating the image of a vast ocean on a windy, but clear day.

Naruto's body, however, betrayed himself and brought his feelings to the forefront as a single drop slid from those full azure eyes. He immediately shut them as he felt the droplet pass the edge of his bottom eyelid, attempting to capture the forsaken saltwater liquid between the many strands of his blonde transparent eyelashes. Unfortunately the dam had already been broken, and there was no way of stopping its rampage.

He clutched his head, defeated.

/How! How! Sasuke…/ Now the inevitable occurred. He felt the empty, buoyancy of loneliness surround him.

He adverted his eyes to the sky, ironically blue and clear as his eyes, but stable and resolute unlike his emotions. The urge to scream out to Sasuke, wherever he disappeared to, nearly overpowered his being, but even apart he could allow the Uchiha to win.

"You left me, left me to suffer all alone." Naruto found himself whispering. "Why? What do you think I can do? You really think I would forget you?"

His voice sounded strained as he spoke to the silent, chilling air. Images of his childhood days as a ninja flooded his mind. He recalled training vigorously with Sasuke, the many times he had stopped to save him.  Images of Haku, their first true ninja battle flooded his memory and along with them, came the dreadful sight of a dead Sasuke. With that picture his resolve returned.

"I refuse, Sasuke. I refuse to allow you to leave. You will come back. You don't have the option of leaving me alone. I don't permit it." Naruto remembered all those morning he awoke in the blind hope that it was just a dream that Sasuke had fled; all the times Sasuke helped him, every moment he spent getting to know the stoic, misunderstood young ninja whom others only saw as the talent of the town, hadn't existed in vain; Naruto still had his best friend in those final moments of half sleep.

"I know how you feel. I've been alone all my life…" Naruto sympathized aloud. "But if you don't let me help, you'll always be alone. The pain will never leave, if you don't give me the chance. Why can't you see that, Sasuke?"

His arms encircled his own sides, almost imagining Sasuke inside the embrace. He always envisioned that if he could embrace Sasuke in this manner , he would be able to get him to return home, with him and the rest of Team 7. Maybe if he were to hold Sasuke this way, he would understand, they would bond again, and he would want to return.

"Yes, Sasuke. I will have you understand. When you return, you will want to. It is my turn to save you. I will bring you home. We will never be lonely again. I will take care of both of us, protect both of us, and finally become Hokage of Konoha; but I can only do all of this when you return to us, Sasuke. So please, come back."

Gently, the words of promise fluttered through the air. The still calm of the slowly passing day engulfed the sound of each syllable, storing them for later use. Naruto shut his troubled eyes, allowing the wind to glide through his loose strands of blonde. If he concentrated, he saw the image of their possible future, one he often recreated in his moments alone to quell the ache left in his heart when Sasuke left him.

In this dream, he sat on his rooftop, the far off mountains that bear the faces of each of Konoha's Hokages a near orange-red hue as the sun set behind them. One slender muscled arm slid around a slim well-toned waist. That arm pulled a dark head close to him, the soft, silken strands of ebony resting just beneath his chin as he held his companion. Naruto never spoke a word, or even breathed, in this dream;  he feared breaking it; he held any instincts at bay. But there was one impulse he could never squash, as he held the strong, elegant form of a sacred Konoha clan member. A soft sigh escaped him, as he felt the warmth of the other body press closer to him.

That simple sound broke his fantasy, but the effect remained. Calm had once again washed over him and his eyes dried. He wiped away any traces of his inner struggle with loneliness and opened his eyes to a new world. His heart strong once again, blue eyes steady as a still open sea gazed ahead, into the possibility of a future with a companion; a future where loneliness would never have to plague his soul or his dear friends.

"Sasuke, I promise, I will not leave you alone a second time." The wind blew harshly, carrying stray loose leaves and speckles of dirt from his feet with its power. In this brief space of time, Naruto could believe in the wind's strength to carry his words to Sasuke, and with that idea he knew he would never break this promise now.

"Yes, Sasuke, I do."

Please let me know what you thought? Should I never write alone again? Should I improve? What? How? (Remember I am the detailed one, and if nothing else you get the opprotunity to bite into me for the many times I have attacked others!)

Worked Hard-ish on,
