Adventuring (Open)

Finding clothing ended up being a bit more of an experience than he would have expected. Spock's drawers and his half of the closet was easy enough to figure out, but some of the clothing was down right confusing. Robes and things that wrapped around, there was a green one in particular that kept attracting his eye but he couldn't figure out how to ( Read more... )

It wasn't until Ephram saw Commander Spock in the corridor that he realized how long it had been since the two had crossed paths. Also a bit of a shock was to see Spock wearing something other than his uniform. Ephram mentally shrugged. Maybe Spock had been inspired by the recent visit to the Vulcan colony; maybe he wanted to express that side of his heritage more.

As they grew closer in the hallway, Ephram nodded a greeting. "Hello, Commander."

If it hadn't been for the movie, Zach would not have even realized Ephram was greeting him. Instead he stopped, studying the unknown man who looked far younger than his white hair proclaimed. To be greeted like that, he must not have known about the switching. Zach chewed it over in his mind, should he just greet the man and keep talking? What if he wanted to talk? He couldn't fake being Spock for long or could he?, the demon on his shoulder whispered.

"Good morning," spoken in Spock's cool tone, and Zach started to walk by. Not that he entirely knew where he was going, but for right now he wanted to explore as much of the ship as he could, realizing at that moment that as First Officer he would technically have access to almost anywhere if not everywhere, and find himself something to write in if it was even possible.

That seemed a bit cool even for the Vulcan. Maybe Ephram should make more friendly overtures...

"Commander, if I may..." he added before Spock could get too far past. "That's a lovely--er, very aesthetically pleasing garment you have on. Is it traditional Vulcan clothing? I would love to learn more about the culture, if you're willing to share."

That didn't go as well as he had hoped. Zach swallowed, turning on a heel. How best to do this without losing any face for Spock? "Forgive me, I suppose you haven't heard what's happening on ship? I am... not Spock."

Ephram looked at the man for a small, silent moment. "How, exactly, are you not Spock?" he asked slowly.

It was no surprise to him when a part of him slipped back into character. "It seems roughly one third of the ship's crew has been switched, their minds in a different body." Then slipped out of character as his voice more meekly delivered, "Sickbay can confirm my words."

"Oh I don't doubt you're telling me the truth," Ephram said quickly. "You say one-third of the crew has had this happen? Are there any ideas about the cause?"

"Not that I know of," Zach admitted. He was proud he remembered not to offer his hand to the stranger. "My name is Zachary Quinto, it's a pleasure to meet you." He tried to be extra polite, after all, this was a more military based working relationship on the ship, and he had no idea who this man was.

"I could find that out elsewhere," Ephram said. This man seemed more than a bit ill at ease, and Ephram wanted to reassure him.

"Good to meet you, Mr. Quinto. I believe I've heard the name before...you have a connection of a sort to Commander Spock, if I recall. Oh, and my name is Ephram Green," he added with a small grin. "Almost forgot that. I've been assigned from Starfleet Intelligence to look into strange happenings on the ship, such as body swaps. Are you handling things all right? I was part of some strangeness myself not long ago."

Starfleet intelligence? Did that mean he should be careful around this man? Zach hid his uncomfortable feelings beneath a cool facade. "It's been a learning experience, for sure. I was the actor who played Spock, like the actors I've been told you had on board at some point?"

"Oh, yes. I met Mr. Nimoy not long ago. It was quite the experience. And..." he added, trying to keep as friendly a demeanor as possible, "I know you're probably wary of me because I'm from Intel, but if you need something from Starfleet, I may be able to act as intermediary. Are you doing all right with Twenty-Third Century things so far?"

"It's been quite the experience," Zach admitted with a tiny smile on his lips. Seemed the man was quite keen to pick up on his uneasy feeling so quickly. "Thank you for the offer, though, I'll keep it in mind."

He thought for a moment, wondering why Starfleet would have someone like Green on board the Enterprise. "How long have you been on board?"

"I've been on board nearly a year now. Starfleet decided in its ample bureaucratic wisdom," he added with a large helping of sarcasm, "that I should stay for the entire five-year mission." He lingered before his next words, wanting to learn more about the past from someone who'd lived it.

"If I could ask something, completely unofficially, what was the biggest shock about coming two hundred years into the future? Aside from the body switch of course."

The question made him laugh, because what two bigger shocks could there be? "I'm not sure that there is something that much bigger of a shock!" But he thought over the question, frowning before coming up with something that was true. "That this is real. We played this," Zach gestured around them, "as a movie. Down to the last detail, it is exactly the same, except the hallways don't end because they're sets and aliens are real instead of makeup."

Okay, seeing Spock laugh, even when he knew it was another mind inside that body, was quite surreal. Spock would not like it if he ever heard, but a smile on that Vulcan face was very attractive, like it belonged there instead of the usual austere Vulcan mask.

Ephram nodded. "It would probably disorient me just as much if I ever found this wasn't real," he said. "If the hallways did end and the aliens took off their makeup. The next natural question is, I suppose, do you wnat to get back to your home universe and time?"
