Lindsay, Danny and Don Flack walked through the police department on their way to interview a suspect. Lindsay suddenly stopped dead, causing Danny to bump into the back of her. “Wow, what’s the hold up Montana?” Lindsay didn’t answer him, and instead started weaving her way through the desks towards a forlorn looking woman sat in one of the chairs. She stopped in front of the woman, knelt down and took held her hands. “Briar, what are you doing here? What’s happened to your face?” Her words tumbled over each other as she reached up to gently touch a scrape on the side of the woman’s face. Danny and Don stood awkwardly behind Lindsay, taking in the scene before them, Danny’s arms folded across his chest, Don’s hands shoved into his trouser pockets. “Hey Lins,” the woman smiled weakly. “I, um, got mugged outside work. I popped into the car park to get some bits from a car for the PTA meeting and this guy came from nowhere and tried to snatch the box. He obviously thought it was valuable, it was an old TV box, but it just had Christmas decorations in. I tried to stop him but he pushed me to the ground. And I kinda banged my head.” She added, gingerly reaching up to touch the egg shaped lump on her forehead.
Danny and Don were still stood behind Lindsay and shared a look of confusion. Don cleared his throat loudly, unsure whether he should interrupt the two women. Lindsay looked round at the sound, and Briar looked up noticing the two men for the first time. “Is everything ok Montana?” Danny asked, a genuine note of anxiety in his voice. Lindsay stood up and placed her hand on Briar’s shoulder as she spoke. “Yeah, I guess. This is my roommate Briar.” Both men simultaneously relaxed as they remembered Lindsay talking about her roommate, repeatedly, to them both. “Oh,” Don exclaimed, a look of concern crossing his face. “You sure you’re ok? You don’t look so good Briar.” A weak smile touched her lips again. “I’ll be fine, I just need a drink.” She replied faintly, before gingerly standing up. “The vending machines are this way Briar.” Lindsay said, stepping back to allow her roommate space to move.
Briar took one unsteady step forwards before tumbling sideways. “Whoa!” Don exclaimed, catching her before she could fall, as Lindsay also stepped forward to hold Briar’s arm. Between them they lowered her gently back into the chair. “I think she’s in shock.” Lindsay said, before turning to Danny, a pleading look in her eyes. “I’ll go get her something sweet.” He said, almost reading Lindsay’s mind, before weaving his way back through the desk towards the vending machines.

Briar bumped into Don by the entrance to the police station after giving her statement. She stood staring at the floor, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. “Who took your statement?” Don asked awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. Briar started to pick at the fabric of her cardigan as she replied. “Van Morris. ‘least that’s what I think his name was.” She sighed before continuing. “I’m just glad it’s over, I just want to get home and have a soak in the bath.”
“Have you got a ride home?” Don asked. Briar shook her head and then winced as an arrow of pain shot through it. “I haven’t no, I’ll probably just take a cab home. Don’s face took on a determine edge at Briar’s answer. “There’s no way I’m letting you get a cab home, no way in hell, not after the day you’ve had. I’ll drive you. And don’t think of arguing, I have a gun and I’m not afraid to use it.” Don joked, delighting in the smile that touched Briar’s lips at his weak attempt at a joke. “Car’s this way.” He added, gently gripping her elbow and steering her towards the car park.

A week later, Briar and Lindsay were making the most of Lindsay having a rare evening off from work and were settled on the sofa for a movie night, with a collection of DVDs, a large pile of chocolate and popcorn to keep them going. “Ok Lins, which next, Grease or Dirty Dancing?” The doorbell ringing prevented Lindsay from answering. She sighed heavily as she got off the sofa to answer the door. “You choose.” She shouted back from the front door, before opening it. A sheepish looking Don greeted her. “Flack, what are you doing here?” Lindsay asked, stepping back to let him into the apartment. She looked on bemused as Flack proceeded to trip over his words like a nervous school boy. “I…erm…I…I just wanted to see how Briar was getting on.” Lindsay’s lips turned up into a smile as she realised Don had something hidden behind his back. “She’s ok Don, but what’s that behind your back?” Lindsay ducked behind Don and snatched a bunch of flowers out of his hands. “Aw, flowers, you shouldn’t have!” Don grimaced and snatched the flowers back before he spoke. “I didn’t, they’re not for you Monroe, they’re for Briar.”
Before Lindsay could think of something witty to say to Don, her thoughts were interrupted by the pager on her phone beeping. She looked at it before cursing under her breath. “Great, I’m needed at the lab. So much for movie night! I’m sorry Briar, they’re gonna owe me for this!” She grabbed her coat reluctantly, eager to see Briar and Don’s conversation continue. She hesitated as she opened the apartment door, looking back to see Don hand Briar the flowers. “Bye then Lindsay.” Don stated, before hip-barging Lindsay out of the door and closing it in her face. “You’re such a charmer Donald Flack!” She shouted through the closed door, but with a huge smile on her face.

Lindsay was still smiling when she reached the lab. “Hey Montana! What you smiling at, thought it was supposed to be your night off?” Only Danny Messer could supply her with such a greeting! She shook her head in an attempt to remove the smile from her face. “You see Flack before you left out Montana?” Lindsay decided to feign ignorance, trying to make her face look as blank as possible. “Flack? Why would I see him?” She replied, biting her lip to stop herself from smiling. “Think he’s got a thing for your roommate, when he left he was on about buying her flowers or something.”
“Aw, how sweet!” Lindsay returned, still biting her lip. “I can’t remember the last time anyone bought me flowers.”
“Don’t tell me,” Danny said teasingly. “You’d be happy with a bunch of hay?! Country girl!” He grinned. Lindsay playfully slapped his arm. “C’mon Messer, let’s see what Mac needs us for.”

“I tell you Messer, they’re not going to be in bed together when I get in! Or making out on the sofa! I swear your mind was raised in the gutter Messer!” Danny continued to protest his innocence and the cleanliness of his mind as he followed Lindsay along the corridor to her apartment. “I bet you $20 they’ve slept together Montana, Flack hasn’t shut up about her for the past week!” Lindsay rolled her eyes as she unlocked the apartment door, Danny was certainly determined he was right. Lindsay held her breath as she crossed the threshold into the apartment. It seemed quiet enough, but that didn’t really mean anything either way.
She walked into the living room to find Briar curled up against Don, fast asleep, with his arm wrapped protectively around her shoulder. He held a finger to his lip to indicate that Danny and Lindsay should be quiet. “Shh,” he whispered. “She’s asleep and I don’t want you two loudmouths waking her. Danny and Lindsay both look chastised and silently sat themselves on the sofa opposite Don and the sleeping Briar.
“Y’know,” Don whispered, “I’m gonna put Briar in her bed, that way yous two won’t wake her so easily.” Danny and Lindsay bowed their heads at this, peeking up through their eyelashes to watch as Don tenderly lifted Briar from the sofa and carried her into her room. You owe me $20 Messer.” Lindsay whispered as soon as Don was out of earshot, holding her hand out to him.
