Representative Goode is
WAY off base with these statements, both about the purported "threat" of Muslim-Americans being elected officials AND the fact that Representative Ellison wishes to use the Koran rather than the Christian Bible to take the oath of office. Goode's opposition to politicians who are Muslim and his warped linkage to immigration scaremongering is irrational and unfounded. Furthermore, I'd like to ask Representative Goode how there can be any hope for stability and peace in the Middle East if not for Muslim politicians who wish to participate in democratic political institutions. How can he (presumably) advocate for such advances abroad, and the necessary involvement of Muslim politicians, and yet condemn it here??
I also think there is a strong argument that the establishment clause is violated if members are forced to swear over the particular Christian religious text, or any other particular religious text for that matter. Frankly, I am of the opinion that everyone should just take the oath over the United States Constitution. That's much more relevant and inclusive.
[Edit: It is nice to see that Congressman Ellison is being
extremely diplomatic and articulate in his response to Goode.]
