Ah, but he didn't know how he'd been acting towards Cas before he got his soul back. Before the aborted hug, had Cas even mentioned Sam being soulless? I can't remember.
There must be some reason they'll explain later on as to why there was no hug. I'm hoping there's a reason...
I don't think he knew how douchebaggy he'd been until Cas told him everything he'd done (a conversation which we didn't get to see, and I'm sorely disappointed about that, because it would have been a great scene for them).
Sam didn't even know he'd been walking around without a soul, so he wouldn't have known what he'd done without it. The last thing he remembered was falling into the cage.
Awww, the omission of that scene! X( Another demerit for you writers! Don't you know more Cas screen time solves everything? Lol.
I actually didn't view the entirety of this episode until recently (changed the channel about halfway when I realized Cas wasn't coming back), but ah, that makes sense. But maybe he kind of subconsciously remembers; that's why he ended up turning to Cas in the first place.
I am posing that question to Misha at the L.A next weekend. I will get an answer dammit. And i will maime Misha if he doesn't give me a serious answer. This fangirl doesn't joke when it comes to hugs on Supernatural.
Though that 'boner' theory explains everything.
