"FDR led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.
John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5800 per year.
Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions."
My family's in the middle class, and we're not hurting anymore than we were when Clinton was in office. Economies work in cycles. The anonymous commenter above makes great points about that.
And just to clear some things up: The Patriot Act 2 is a bipartisan effort to renew what already exists. It's not Bush's love child. You don't have the right to say that Bush is a racist, sexist, classist, etc. I don't like what he has to say about homosexuality, but it doesn't make him evil. Check your numbers on the loss of lives in Iraq. I think it's in the area of some 30 to 40,000. It's a war; a war Kerry voted to authorize, whether we belong there or not. You blame Bush for not capturing Osama, look at what I quoted above.
If you don't like what's going on in the world, get out there and fight for what you believe in. You have that right. I don't think Bush is the greatest President we've had, but he's not the worst. See Katy's comment above. Democracy means losing sometimes, and of course you feel angry and afraid. But if all you do is feel angry and afraid, you're doing nothing.
