Remember the metallic blue guppies I bought two weeks ago? Well I bought three that looked most likely to be pregnant, and we were right with at least one of them! Today I rescued three baby guppies and put them in a separate enclosure within the main tank. (Guppies are live bearing fish, which means they give birth instead of laying eggs.) While I'm sure the lady fish will have many babies in the future, these first fry are the most important, as they're not genetically related to the male guppy already in residence. (Gestation is 28 days, and the studly fish has only been wooing them for 14).
The momma fish still looks pretty fat, so she might still have more coming. These babies were a good size though, so I dont think she's be carrying that many more! I hope we can eventually build a guppy population that'll allow me to have my own tank at some point (These guys are my sister's fish: I stocked and decorated her tank for her birthday.) I'm sure my sister will be excited to come back from work and discover That she's gone from four fish to seven :)
