Unspoken Fears
Severus ran his hand through the black mess of hair, his fingers gently resting on the pale cheek. "Only you, Professor Potter, would be reckless enough to step between two inept third-years as they cast unknown hexes at each other."
He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to stop the fear he once again felt growing inside him. When Poppy had summoned him to the hospital wing, he'd been prepared to tell Potter how incredibly stupid he'd been. What he hadn't been prepared for was how pale Harry was, his face nearly the colour of the starched white sheets. Nor had he expected to feel so completely helpless when he was told that they weren't certain there wasn't permanent damage from the fall Harry had taken when struck by the simultaneous hexes.
A movement behind him had Severus quickly drawing his hand away from Harry's cheek.
"No need for that, Severus," Minerva said softly. "No one is more pleased than I that two of my favourite professors have found happiness together."
Severus cleared his throat and nodded. "If only the infernal brat would wake. I plan to tell him exactly how foolishly he behaved."
Minerva shook her head, a small smile on her lips, before patting Severus on the shoulder and leaving the ward to find Poppy.
Harry shifted in the bed; he'd woken to hear Minerva and Severus' conversation. "Severus?" Harry blinked into the brightness of the hospital wing before squeezing his eyes closed. "Water," he croaked out.
Severus lifted a glass from the table and poured a small amount of water into it before carefully raising Harry's head enough to allow him to take a few sips.
"I feel like I've been run over by the Knight Bus," Harry muttered, lying back down. He turned to look at Severus. "What happened?"
All the frustration and fear Severus had felt since Harry had been brought in flew to the surface like a freshly released Snitch. He paused for a moment in an attempt to control his anger.
"What happened," Severus began in a cool, formal tone, "was that once again the Great and Powerful Professor Potter jumped into the middle of a situation before taking the time to shield himself or determine the best course of action! For the love of Merlin! Have you any idea exactly how foolish and dangerous your actions were?"
Harry reached out and took Severus's hand in his, his thumb gently caressing it. When Severus's tirade began to lose steam and he tried to pull his hand back, Harry responded by simply holding it even more tightly.
Harry raised Severus's hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly. "I love you too, Severus."
Severus scoffed, then looked at Harry, his despair apparent. "I could have lost you."
"But you didn't."
"Then promise me you will never again enter into a precarious situation without assessing the danger first!"
Harry looked at Severus, then to the wall and back at Severus. His lips twitched.
Severus sighed before leaning over to kiss Harry on his forehead. "Pardon me, I neglected to take into account your Gryffindor tendency to leap before you look." He crossed his arms as he sat back in the chair. "Fine, then at least promise me you'll attempt to remember you're the professor and simply disarm the hooligans next time."
"That I can do," Harry said with a smile.
