So Mr. Club has a mind after all. Inconvenient, that.
By all accounts he made Mr. Caster look the fool in the matter of the car. Which was the first indication; Zach may choose to seem foolish for his own ends, but he's rarely put in that role by others. (Unless the two of them are playing some deeper game that I haven't seen yet... which is entirely possible, but only furthers the conclusion.)
He's befriended the Prince. If that wasn't obvious from that first night, and the things that have gone over the list, it became so on Friday. He ran rings around poor Markel. He's something of a history buff. (Assuming he's not lying about his age; and why not? I did.) He can read the political winds and follow trends to a logical conclusion. (A correct conclusion remains to be seen, but at least he's familiar with the concept of logic.) And I sat and watched while he impressed - dare I say charmed? - Aleksandyr and Bella. (In Aleksandyr's case, I'm beginning to think the two terms are one and the same - that is, he's so rarely impressed that when someone pulls it off, that person is instantly entered into consideration for a potential ally or enemy - or, possibly, both.)
All of which makes it very awkward that I do not actually like him.
Oh, in a way he's entertaining, and it's always refreshing to hear intelligent opinions. His language and turns of phrase are an education unto themselves. But while Bella may be amused by descriptions of terrifying and then murdering people for fun, I am not. Other things as well - such as his tendency to fly off the handle with no regard to where he is, who the other person is, or whether the offense really warrents a violent response - disturb me as well. But in the main, yes - the gleeful joy he takes in doing what I can only consider evil... I find him distasteful.
And I doubt if there are many others in the city who would share that, or even understand why I feel that way. And because of that very fact, I need to be on good terms with him.
