Three bands, Entry free 100 bucks, Royal Mirage Restaurant, Hotel Crowne Plaza. 18th June Sunday
Advaita: It was my first time seeing them play. Heard they were a fusion band but didn't really know what to expect. They had a Sarangi player who supposedly played a show for Steve Vai. As their set progressed i was quite caught up in their groove. very nice instrumental parts with those odd time signatures. bassist really took the spotlight. IMO he was
the bassist in the limelight for the night :) Their guitarist had very trippy patches which complimented their songs well but i would have loved it if he added a bit of shred here and there in his solos which didn't really keep me interested after a while (look who's talking now!!).
both western and classical vocals not really convincing enough for me either. like i said earlier, i enjoyed their instrumental sections better.
Orange Street: Well i am one of those that LOVE the old OS and don't really think much of their current path of musical direction with the subsequent line up changes. so despite their laid back sloppy performance it was enough that the OLD OS songs were being played. i drooled at Cheema's gear alright but cringed at some of his patches :p
OS began with a few covers...opened with Pearl Jam, then played Them Bones ALice in Chains, Angry again Megadeth, and their old songs like Saint Sinner, Over n Under, Baby ANaconda, Candywalk, Sneak Preview. Now these were songs that i had grown up listening to as far as Indian bands are concerned, so however unrehearsed their execution, i was all ears.
Ashwin the drummer, who is a friend of mine now, we go to the same church and hang out and stuff, was pretty neat though he didn't really get to shine on the songs.
TAAQ: I had waited so long and finally a chance to see them play in Delhi. was surprised to see Tony Das play along with them. i mean i was positioned just in front of where the guitar amps and here he was setting up. and then we go "Tony!!""Sashi!!"
He did very well with his fillers here and there and really complimented Bruce. It also gave Bruce the freedom to solo some more which was real nice because some of the songs had solos in places where they never had them before! and some wisecracks from Tony in the middle...
"I might not appear to be having as great a time on stage as the rest of the band, but the reason is because you can't really when you have a cymbal stand up your ass.." Small stage you see...
David looked the part of eccentric vocalist with his tricks. Like a Mick Jagger/Freddie Mercury :)
Having seen TAAQ play as a 3 piece band all the while, it was great to see the 5 man solid line up...they certainly sounded fuller and obviously, coming back from a tour, more tight!
Opened their set with 'Sanity in Gravity' from Jupiter Cafe...went on to play Bend the World, Paper Puli, The Steal, Wishing for Magic, Look at Me, Brigade Street... and a couple of newer songs too. they didn't play anything from the debut album though there were some calls for Sunset Man.
They played one awesome cover in their set...their version of Roxanne which was tastefully done!
I had a rocking time up front singing along, applauding and just with this stupid grin all the while. I had this sense of pride(?) even...the "see i told you they were something else" attitude written all over..hehe..but hell, TAAQ came as a pleasant surprise to many Delhi rockers who'd never seen or heard them before!
Great gig. Paisa Vasool.
Very sad i won't be in delhi to catch them play their gig on the 30th at India Habitat Center
