Last night there was a private reading of the House Book for a few dear friends. It was not intended to be public; that's coming later, and that'll be the one I'll be upset if you're there to see.
Whoo. Remarkable. I've been writing, rewriting and editing for this reading since May. There were far more statements than questions afterward. Which was a sudden relief -- I've spent so long with this book, clarifying so often, that it only occurred to me after reading that there might be questions. But everyone said most of what I'm considering in this book is clear, communicated, present. And no one batted an eye when I suggested the book is circular.
*happy daaaaaaaance*
I'm pretty sure the thing clocked in, with intermission, at about 1:15. And from where I sit, the thing is either going to have to stay about this long, or lengthen by 1/3 -- the first pass through the house (basement to top floor) constitutes the first half of the book. The second pass, the latter half. And this both creates mood and narrative flow problems. But I knew that going into last night, and my editors know it, too.
It's a long road to the summit, still, but last night was such an important switchback. I can't wait to see y'all again at the top.
