“For this holiday, people dress in costumes, wear masks, and pursue that which is unnatural or strange?” Starfire asked.
“Yes,” Raven said in her customary flat tone.
“How is this holiday different from what we normally do?” Starfire asked, not seeing anything unusual in Raven’s description of the holiday.
Raven opened her mouth to answer, blinked, and suggested Starfire talk to Cyborg.
~
“So black and orange are the colors of this holiday?” Starfire confirmed.
“Yep, black and orange. Other colors are fairly common as well, but black and orange are the official colors of Halloween,” Cyborg confirmed.
“So,” Starfire paused in confusion. “…Is Slade always celebrating this holiday of tricks and treats and spooky things?”
~
“Halloween is a celebration of the harvest, when foods like apples and corn and pumpkins are displayed?” Starfire asked after Beast Boy had explained a little about Halloween decorating.
“Yeah, that’s part of it,” Beast Boy agreed.
“Splendid! I shall display my bromulerian fungus garden!” Starfire exclaimed.
“Ummmm,” Beast Boy started. Wasn’t that the stuff that had tried to-
“Do not worry, friend. I have trained the fungus to stop attempting to eat Silkie. It…should not attempt to eat anyone.” Beast boy winced at how uncertain Starfire sounded. That stuff had chased him last time he got near it!
“You know what? You should talk to Robin,” Beast Boy suggested. “His mentor is Batman after all.”
~
“Robin? I have asked the others about this Halloween, and Beast Boy said that I should ask you because your mentor was Batman. What did he mean by that?” Starfire asked, thoroughly bewildered by the various descriptions of the holiday she had gotten so far.
Robin sighed. “Bats are traditionally associated with the holiday. But it would have been better to say that you should ask me because I’m from Gotham. That’s much more relevant. You see, what Mardi Gras is to New Orleans, Halloween is to Gotham.”
“Mardi Gras?” Starfire asked.
“Sorry, never mind. It doesn’t have anything to do with Halloween. What I meant was, sometimes particular cities get associated with a certain holiday. Gotham is like that, and Halloween is Gotham’s holiday. Sit down, I’ll explain everything you need to know.”
~
Starfire cheerfully blended pumpkin puree, candy corn, and mustard together into a shake. Robin, Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg watched in disgusted fascination. Pouring her concoction into a glass, Starfire took a large gulp.
“Delicious! Friends, would you like some?” She held out the blender with the remaining ‘beverage.’ Everyone shook their heads. “I am so glad I understand about Halloween now,” Starfire said as she sipped her ‘drink’. “It seems like a glorious holiday.”
