221b Baker Street

Mar 28, 2008 21:05

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson lived in a Victorian lodging house at 221b Baker Street between 1881-1904, according to the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The famous study overlooking Baker Street that has been portrayed in so many films over the years is located on the 1st floor above a flight of 17 steps. Doctor Watson’s bedroom on the 2nd floor overlooks a small yard at the rear of the house, while Mrs Hudson’s room is at the front. Mrs Hudson was the landlady of the lodging house who prepared meals and undertook household duties for her two famous tenants.

In reality, this building had a different street name and number in the days of Holmes's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Even today, the actual street address is 239 Baker Street, and the museum uses the fictional 221B address only by special permission of the City of Westminster.
The easiest way to find: Tube Station - Baker Street (Circle, Metropolitan, Jubilee, Hammersmith&City lines), http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?oi=eu_map&q=NW16XE&hl=en.

Sherlock Holmes was by all accounts born on 6th January 1854, and for more than a century his name has been known in every country of the world; and not only his name, but his appearance too. The hawk-like features and piercing eyes; the dressing-gown and pipe; the deerstalker cap and magnifying glass - these details are so familiar that if he were to appear amongst us today we should know him at once. Dr Watson considered Holmes to be "the worst tenant in London', who 'keeps his cigars in the coal-scuttle, his tobacco in the toe-end of a Persian slipper, and his letters transfixed by a jack-knife to the centre of the wooden mantelpiece". Strange visitors, chemical experiments and late-night violin playing also tried the patience of their landlady Mrs Hudson.

Interesting at the museum web-site: Baker Street Webcam, Baker Street Times, Letters to Holmes, the map where Holmes lived and worked, the photo of Ms Irene Adler, some criminals, Quotations and Cartoons sections, and of course all stories about Sherlock.
