Summary: Inui-senpai has a girlfriend and Momo wonders if he should get one too. But wait, Kaidou has someone he likes? Who!?
”Inui-senpai has a girlfriend!” Momo declared from the clubroom's door to bunch of first years who stared at him surprised. Momo looked around, trying to see someone who he usually spoke with but didn't find any of the regulars or any of the ichinen trio. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. In the corner of the club room sat one stupid snake. Not Momo's first or even 101st choice to talk to but better than nothing.
”I saw them!” Momo dropped his bag on the floor and sat down on the bench. Kaidou kept frowning to his racket. Momo looked at him and felt annoyed. Had the snake gone deaf now?
”Did you hear what I said?” He leaned into Kaidou's personal space and finally got a reaction. Kaidou hissed and shoved Momo's face away.
”Everybody heard you.”
”Well?”
”Well what?”
”Inui-senpai has a girlfriend! You don't have anything to say about that?”
Kaidou hissed shortly. ”I knew he had a girlfriend.”
”You knew and didn't say anything? I can't believe you, I really can't!” Momo smacked Kaidou in the head which earned him another hiss and a punch on the arm.
”It's none of your business.”
Momo chose to not hear that and leaned against the locker. ”She was quite pretty. I wonder if she knows about his juices.”
Kaidou snorted. ”She's his chemistry partner.”
Momo looked surprised. ”How do you know that?”
”Senpai told me,” Kaidou shrugged. He frowned to his racket again, it seemed the springs on it were coming loose. Momo leaned into take a look and didn't care about Kaidou cursing at him.
”You need to get those fixed” he spoke and stood up to finally start to change his clothes. Kaidou muttered something that he took as a yes. Momo was still thinking Inui-senpai and the girl he had seen him with. She had been pretty, she really had. Momo wondered if Inui-senpai had drugged her but disregarded that thought quickly. Even senpai wouldn't do that. At least, not on purpose. Beside, she hadn’t looked like she was drugged. She had looked happy. Smiling and softly touching senpai's hand.
Momo looked down beside him, where Kaidou was tying his bandana. He pulled his shirt off and tossed it in the locker.
”Maybe I should get a girlfriend too,” he said thoughtfully. He thought about the girls he knew. Of course there were the first year girls that were always hanging around Echizen but they weren't really his type. Then there was Tachibana's little sister but Kamio would probably get a heart attack if Momo would try something with her. Which was almost a good enough reason to try to something with her, Momo grinned to himself, but it wouldn't be fair for her. There were some cute girls on his class too. Maybe he should get to know some of them better? Some of them could turn out to be great cooks.
Momo woke up from his thoughts to hear Kaidou muttering. ”What did you say, mamushi?”
”Like anyone would want to date you,” Kaidou hissed and glared at Momo.
”Just because no one would ever like your ugly face doesn't mean we all have to suffer.”
Kaidou hissed but didn't say anything. Momo noticed a small blush creeping onto his face though. His jaw dropped.
”Don't tell me you have a girlfriend!?”
Kaidou hissed again and this time he was definitely blushing. Momo sat down on the bench and looked at Kaidou with his mouth open.
”Seriously?!”
Kaidou gave him an annoyed sideglance. ”It's none of your business.” He rose up to leave but Momo pulled him back down and after a short shuffling, Kaidou stayed there.
”How... what...”
”I don't have a girlfriend, idiot,” he hissed and kept starting at the floor. Momo relaxed a bit.
”Why did you blush then, stupid snake,” he grumbled.
”Someone confessed to me today,” Kaidou said softly, a faint pink playing on his cheeks. Momo's jaw dropped again.
”To you?”
”Who else, idiot.”
”Are you sure they didn't confuse you to someone else? Maybe that person doesn't see well.”
”Don't be stupid. She said my name.”
”I... well, what did you say? Are you going out with her now?” Momo felt a weight settle into his stomach. Would the stupid snake start going to dates from now on? Would he get pink letters delivered in the mornings? Would the girl come and wait for him after their tennis practices? Would Momo have to stop fighting with the idiot so that the snake could look good for his girlfriend?
”That's none of your business either,” Kaidou muttered. Momo could feel the heat radiating from the other boy.
”Why can't you just tell me what you said, idiot” Momo wanted to smack Kaidou again but decided to save it for a later time. He really wanted to hear what Kaidou had said.
”... I told her I already have someone I like.” Kaidou now resembled a very ripe tomato. Momo was sure he would lose his jaw if more surprises continued to happen.
”You have someone you like? Who?”
Kaidou hissed shortly and didn't say anything. Momo tried to remember if Kaidou had ever mentioned anyone without his normal scowl but he couldn't come up with anyone. Kaidou was always scowling and preferred to be either alone or to train with Inui-senpai.
”Is it Inui-senpai?” Momo spoke his thought out loud and Kaidou made a noise in his throat.
”What, no! No, it's not Inui-senpai,” he growled to Momo. Momo was relieved. It would have been horrible to see Kaidou pining after Inui-senpai after senpai got a girlfriend.
”Well who is it then?”
”We're going to be late for practise,” Kaidou muttered and stood up. Momo stood up to stop him from going. When Kaidou tried to push him over the way, Momo moved in a way that sent them both falling on the floor.
”Ouch...” Momo grimaced. He had banged his head on the floor. Kaidou had somehow ended up half on him and was now looking at him with a weird expression.
”You okay?” Momo asked. Kaidou looked a bit like he did when he got a concussion and forgot everything and everyone.
Kaidou didn't answer but kept staring Momo which made Momo worried. If Kaidou had gotten a concussion... but how could he, Momo was the one who had banged his head on the floor.
”Kaidou? Earth to mamushi, do you hear me?” Momo waved his hand in front of Kaidou's face. All of a sudden Kaidou took a firm grip of Momo's waving hand, pinned it to the ground and brought his face close to Momo. Momo's eyes widened when he felt the tip of Kaidou's nose touch the tip of his nose slightly. Kaidou looked into his eyes and Momo wondered if Kaidou had finally snapped and gotten insane. He had always known there was something not right about the other boy.
Kaidou closed his eyes which Momo took as a good sign. Crazy killers would prefer to see their victims, right? When Kaidou turned his head a bit and lowered it to brush Momo's lips gently with his own lips, Momo stopped thinking. Sort of. He did think it felt oddly nice. Weird. But nice. Sort of soft. He blinked and then Kaidou leaned a bit more into him, opened his mouth and kissed.
So Momo had never before kissed anyone but he had seen movies. He knew that moving your mouth like that on someone else's lips was classified as kissing. Not to mention that he was moving his own mouth in a similar way, if a bit more clumsily. Kissing. He and Kaidou were kissing.
He and Kaidou were kissing.
Momo opened his eyes and was about to push Kaidou away but was too slow. Kaidou rolled off from Momo, stood up, grabbed his racket and run. Momo was half-laying on the floor, trying to figure out what had just happened and why.
Momo was tired of seeing Kaidou act like nothing had happened. If the snake had had even the decency to avoid him like any normal person after kissing their teammate, he would have felt much better. But no. Kaidou acted like the kiss had never happened and kept growling to Momo like before, mocking him like before and getting into fights with him like before. Momo wondered if he was the only one who felt awkward in the showers. When yanking Kaidou from the collar of his shirt, he wondered what would happen if he accidentally yanked it too hard and he would smash his face into Kaidou's. Momo wondered if he was the only one who felt different when playing doubles with Kaidou. The stupid snake showed no signs of change. As a matter of fact, he showed nothing.
Which was good enough, Momo thought to himself. Like he wanted to have anything to do with Kaidou. Except an opportunity to show him that he was much better in tennis, of course. But that didn't count since he had always wanted to make the snake accept his superiority. So really, Momo should have been happy that things were like they were. Maybe Kaidou had hit his head and had been momentarily confused and thought Momo was someone else. It could happen.
He wasn't happy though. The more time went and the more Kaidou acted like before, the more something gnawed inside of Momo. He kept thinking about the kiss even when he didn't want to. It crept up to him, before he fell asleep, when he was dozing off in the class or when buchou ordered him to run laps. It was always there, in the back of his mind, annoying him. Just like Kaidou, Momo mused to himself. He couldn't get rid of the memory because it was so much like Kaidou. Always there, poking him and irritating him. Stupid snake.
Though Kaidou had been acting like nothing had ever happened, Momo hadn't. He knew it painfully well. He had made a point to not be alone with Kaidou. So it surprised him when he looked up from his shoes and realised they were the only two left in the club room. Kaidou was buttoning up his shirt, not paying any attention to Momo who felt suddenly very awkward. Why hadn't Echizen waited him? Why wasn't Oishi-senpai here to make sure they wouldn't start fighting? Even Fuji-senpai would have been better than no one.
”Your backhand today sucked.” Kaidou broke the silence. Momo very determinedly didn't look at him.
”Like you can say anything with that serve of yours.”
”There's nothing wrong with my serve.”
”My grandma canserve better than you, mamushi.”
”Want to repeat that?” Kaidou growled at Momo and grasped him by the collar. Momo grinned. ”I said my grandma can serve better than you. Ma. Mu. Shi.”
Kaidou hissed and shoved him away hard. Momo kept looking at him.
”Why did you do that? I mean, why did you kiss me?” He asked. Kaidou's hands stopped for a moment.
”It's none of your business.”
”Yes it is, you kissed me!”
Kaidou hissed and didn't answer. Seconds went by and Momo wondered if he should just give up, punch Kaidou and go home. Maybe get some hamburgers on the way.
”You asked.” Kaidou finally muttered to his locker. Momo looked surprised.
”I asked what?”
”You asked who I liked.”
”Yeah and then we fell and I hurt my head and then you kissed me. What has that to do with anything?”
Kaidou looked at Momo slowly. Momo stared back. After a while, Kaidou sighed.
”It's you.”
”It's me what?”
”The person I like.... it's you.” Kaidou muttered.
Momo supported his hand against the locker and sat down.
”Me?”
”Yes. Idiot.”
”You... me... how...” Momo was at loss at words again. Just his luck, he had gone through all his life with always having something to say and then the first and second time he didn't have anything to say, he was talking with Kaidou.
”Look, it's okay. I know you don't... like me, so don't sweat about it. We'll just go back to normal, okay? I'm not going to attack you or anything, okay?”
Momo felt confused. He wanted Kaidou to shut up so he could think a bit but found out that his brains were refusing to cooperate.
”What are you talking about? Like you could attack me even if you wanted to,” Momo said just to say something. He more sensed than saw Kaidou relax a bit and it surprised him. He hadn't know Kaidou had been nervous.
”Whatever,” Kaidou snorted and took out his bag from his locker. He closed it and kicked Momo's foot. ”I'm going, don't forget to turn off the lights.”
Momo reached out his hand when Kaidou was passing him and Kaidou stopped. Momo could feel Kaidou getting tense.
”You... want to go grab burgers or something,” he asked lamely. He wasn't asking Kaidou for a date. Date was movies and dinners and stuff like that. He just wanted to get some more time to think about. And perhaps talk. And he was hungry.
”That stuff is bad for you,” Kaidou grumbled. Momo sighed. Of course it was, at least for the health freak snake. He probably didn't even eat candy.
”Yeah yeah, whatever. We can go and get some ramen if that's better.” Momo took his stuff and started to walk to the door and Kaidou followed him outside.
”You're buying.”
”As if,” Momo snorted. ”You're the one who loooves me.”
”I never said anything about love!” Kaidou hissed and blushed. Momo grinned. This was a Kaidou he knew.
”You're blushing like a girl, Kaoru-chan. I think I’ll start calling you that. Kaoru-chan.”
”Shut up, idiot.”
”Don't be so mean to me, Kaoru-chan. Remember that you looove me.”
”I don't love you! Idiot!”
Momo grinned.
”Fine fine, I'll buy for you. Just because it's a man's duty to pay.”
”Forget it. I'm not going.”
”Don't be like that, Kaoru-chan. ”
”Stop calling me that!”
”Why, it's your name, isn't it? C'mon, hop on my bike, we'll get there faster.”
”I'm going to smash your head in.”
”Whatever you say, Kaoru-chan.”
Kaidou answered something but the wind took his words away. Momo was sure it was something colorful and grinned to himself. He started to pedal faster and felt Kaidou squeeze his shoulders harder. He would pay for this later on but right now he wanted to find out if he could make Kaidou scream by showing his great biking skills.
Plus he really was hungry so the faster they got to the ramen place, the better.
