Extraneous memories

I don't even know what brought it to mind, but years ago I drove cross country with my 10-yr-old son. At one point he said, "I keep seeing signs for froth heaves. What are they? Special restrooms where you can barf?"

"FROST heaves, not froth," I said.

"What is frost?"

"Uh . . . uh . . . it's kind of the stuff in snow cones. Without the flavor added. And frost heaves are those giant bumps in the road."

"Made by earthquakes, right?"

"No, by frost."

Since none of it made any sense to him, as I recall, he went right back to SANDMAN, which he was immersed in that summer.
