I keep coming back to this extraordinary photo of the Milky Way as seen from the Himalayas, which ann1962 posted yesterday.

If I could write poetry, I would try, but my brain only offers music.

numinous, space, links

Some monstrous thing split
The thin, skimmed, milk-quartz studded sky
That the aeons beyond might press through the wound
Making this time bleed every kind of light;
Some titan - or trickster, most like:
Making the scarred night grin.

Sam, is this published? If not, I hope it's on its way to a major venue on solar sails?

The only time I've ever seen the Milky Way vividly was when I was 4000 feet up one night on Kilauea. It was Mythcon that brought me there.

I saw it once from the Grapevine. No street lights to interfere, and it was a clear night.

But the more impressive sighting of it was in the wake of the Northridge quake in '94. The sun wasn't up yet, and the power grid failed for some hours. I looked up from my front porch and there it was. And that was impressive.

Oooh! That is spectacular!

I wish I had the vacation days and the money to take the trip they're running at the end of October.
