Series--thrill or threat?

Over at the Tor.com site, Jane Lindskold talks about series and stand-alones. The nice thing is, she doesn't sneer. I've taken to avoiding the sneer posts. Most of the time they just slang fat fantasy altogether (lumping it all together) or point to one or two examples that the poster didn't like, and again assuming they are All The Same. *hugs* :)

LOL. It also gives me a chance to be small with my little character...if he sells, then I'll go to another (I already know who she is, actually)... I am not well-read enough in this genre to be able to snag from the air this author or that author who handled a series or a serial like this or that...but of what I have read, I know what I like. I like variety, actually! Although I've been leery of tackling Jordan's series--though one of your commentors has made me consider things from a different angle--I have been on of those hanging on a thread for George RR Martin's next installment of his loonnnnggg book of many different covers.

I also am enormously fond of Jacqueline Carey's format--2 trilogies, the trilogies related but separate as well. Sixth book tied up all the loose ends from both trilogies--and she is done. (Though I hear she is writing more in that world--great!). It's not what I want to do with mine though.

Oy, so many ways to handle fantasy--it would be a shame if there wasn't so much variety. I like stand-alones, I like series, I like serials...I just need to read more of all of them to get a firmer grasp on this genre. I know it would do me nothing but good.

Maybe I should make a list... :)
